Beginning of a divorce; 02 properties and differents assets + debt on the table.
I’m going through a divorce, and I’d love to hear some advice from those who’ve been through a similar experience. We have two properties, shared assets, and some debt to divide.
What strategies or tips helped you navigate this process fairly and efficiently?
How did you manage negotiations or ensure a smooth division of both liabilities and property? Any insights on working with lawyers, mediators, or handling financial complexities would be greatly appreciated.
I’m looking for practical suggestions that could help avoid major conflicts and unnecessary expenses.
Suggests?
Thanks in advance!
TaraAre you amicable? We did it on our own without attorneys.
But we were totally amicable, no kids and had a prenup, so it was possible.RobertSorry that your marriage did not work out, but at this point, a good domestic relations attorney is going to be worth their weight in gold.
BarronHow long is the marriage? Any kids? How much is the debt? What state are you locate? Do you have a job?
There are so many questions to answer to your question.
Mel1) Hire the best lawyer you can afford
2) things can turn ugly fast, have communication in text and email – save everything
3) while still amicable, go to safety box together and divide things with sentimental value up
4) best to discuss separating and dividing assets before anger kicks in
5) don’t agree to anything without independent legal advice
6) don’t buy anything large or dispose of assets
7) know your cohabitation and separation dates – this will be used for all debts and assets accrued for division (minus anything that’s an exception)
DavidNot enough information to make any recommendations. Even the calls for legal advice -need to understand more about it before a blanket recommendation on “getting the best lawyer you can afford”.
I once watched two people with no assets (a public school teacher and a musician) run-up a 6-figure sum fighting for the sake of fighting.
She was using “the best lawyer in town” and the unpaid balance on what was owed to that lawyer could have sent their daughter to the most expensive school in the US.
They destroyed what little wealth they had and hurt their own daughter’s future out of spite for each other.
