Where I live, it’s common for people to put things on the curb with a sign that says free. I think it’s not just my area.

I’m wondering if any community has ever done a Day of Curb Gifting? Do you think this idea could catch on?

Maybe on Earth Day, April 22nd?

During covid I had things I had gathered up for a yard sale. But ultimately just didn’t have the energy to mark everything etc.

I set two folding tables out. Posted pictures and posted on local free groups and yard sale groups.

Most everything was gone within the first hour..it was so nice to see people talking and saying hello to each other.

I sat on my porch and enjoyed helping others. I’m probably going to do it again this summer..

It was a great way to declutter without a lot of hassle.

Our town used to have a day every two years to take big items like couches or even cans of paint. Free if you lived in town. It got too big so they dropped it I believe.

(Hasn’t happened recently) We often put stuff on curb with Free sign.

When I did yard sales, I always put free stuff out after that.

Then what was left was taken to thrift. We use our buy nothing local Facebook page a lot too.

We have big trash day the last of each month on trash day. People put out things they don’t want the day before and other people drive around and gather them up.

If nobody takes them then the trash man picks them up on trash day.

We can put out 2 large items each month.

I have only had the trash man pick up 2 items out of everything I have put out.

There is a community nearby that does a large item pick up week, and people put things at the curb that week for others to pick up prior to the garbage truck.

I really wish more people would utilize free pick up from local organizations – it makes me sick how much great stuff goes to the landfill (many people just put it IN the can and don’t even think to give to others!)

It already has “caught on” in my area..
It’s just a common practice that tends to be seasonal in my area. Our neighborhood has a “corner” where large items are placed for pick up by the city with the intent of being discarded.

It is “understood” that anyone who wants em is free to harvest what they please.

It is also very common for college students (especially) who are about to graduate and MOVE to clear their residences by placing items near the curb with a sign that says “FREE”.

It is often more economical for them to buy new when they get where they are going than to ship items across the country (or overseas). It is especially prolific in May.

There are also Churches who encourage and provide space for various donations..
