I love personal finance and would love to start a side gig that could potentially turn into a full-time little personal business.
I’m interested in helping people with their personal finances… specifically finding out where their money is going, budgeting, getting out of debt and setting themselves up for successs! Kind of like a financial coach.
How do I go about this? Are there trainings and or certificates I could get to qualify me more than having just done it for myself?
Im not interested in selling insurances or telling them what to invest in. Just want to help people get ahead.
Any directional tips and input would be much appreciated
CaroleenI am a financial coach. Look into programs such as the AFC (accredited financial counselor), Financial Coach Academy, and Financial Coaches Network Launch program.
AFC is the most well respected training program from a professional standpoint (the financial planning equivalent is the CFP).
The other two I mentioned will help you with the materials and processes and steps to actually get a financial coaching business started.
AmyI’m a financial coach and I would say start with the AFC. It’ll give you the basic financial knowledge and is the most respected.
It’s what the military requires of their financial coaches and most others that hire coaches require that one specifically.
It doesn’t really help with client interactions as far as how to coach someone, how to help a client explore deeper through questioning etc so if you need that, you may look at multiple certifications or degrees.
Ramsey is cool, but it teaches you 1 way to lead clients.
I’ve been coaching 6 years—feel free to ask any questions
NikkiI knew about being a Ramsay coach, but I don’t fully align with his values.
Is there any other way to become a financial coach?
BilhaJust out of experience. People will buy a product much faster than they will pay for coaching.
You can still do the coaching as an added service, brings more people to the table.
A product is what will bring in the money.
BridieYou can do a financial counselling Tafe certificate through salvation army
BethanyYou can get your Series 65. It’s a pretty difficult test, but I was able to pass it on my first try.
It’s the securities license that allows you to be a financial advisor.
My husband and I own our own financial management company.
