I’m constantly on the road for my work, I usually spend about $300 in gas a month. I’m looking for every way I can possibly optimize my fuel use, and every way to reduce the cost of gas.
Right now I’m examining driving habits, looking into Gas Buddy, and looking into cashback cards with gas benefits.
Other than driving less, which isn’t an option for me, is there anything you think I’m missing?
Any specific recommendations?
Thank you!
SandyDo you have an eco setting on your car? I turned mine on and improved avg gas mileage by 3 to 3 miles a gallon.
It takes a couple tanks to register
JenniferDownload Upside and Gasbuddy. Also, download the gas station apps. You can normally get a few cents off from the gas station apps as well.
HollyDriving a fuel efficient vehicle is first. Proper vehicle and tire maintenance. Cruise control on highways. All the gas apps and shopping rewards apps.
Lots of ways to duplicate rewards and points for your receipts.
Mapping the most fuel efficient routes, not the continual bumper to bumper stop and go routes.
MaryIf you drive on the interstate slow down to about 55 mph. I did that when I had a 30 mile one way trip to work. The slower speed improved my gas mileage enough that I was saving about a gallon a week.
It doesn’t sound like much, but over time it adds up.
Short trips and multiple red lights make your mileage suck. Mine goes from 28 to 32 mpg highway to 18 to 20 city.
I also use a credit card with 3% cash back on gas. Use upside when I can. Fill up at Costco when I go there.
It’s too far for me to go anytime I need gas.
And I put all my receipts on fetch to slowly add up to Amazon gift cards.
MelissaI travel alot. I get discounted gas with my Sam’s membership, Pilot App, and Love’s App. I also sleep in the truck stops so no hotel costs.
Keep your tires properly inflated, vehicle maintenance done regularly, use cruise control, drive speed limits. Top off anytime you see gas cheaper (10-20+ cents).
Don’t wait for your tank to be low to get a better price. You might miss out.
Keep a cooler and plug in mug/kettle for meals.
Doesn’t save gas but you won’t be tempted to eat drive thru or gas stations.
MicheleWe bought a hybrid. Less expensive in gasoline. I get 400miles on $40.00 fill up.
MarianNext time you buy a car, make MPG a major consideration.
LaynIf you have a Kroger, they offer fuel points when you shop there for groceries. They have a coupon on Fridays for 4x the fuel points.
I do my shopping on Fridays and always have enough points to get $1 off per gallon.
CarolynDoes your grocery store have a gas program? We shop at Giant and they give u points on every dollar you spend.
By the end of the month we normally save .80- $1.70 off each gallon of gas
JoannaIf it’s for work do you get mileage reimbursement? If not it should be deductible as a business expense.
JulieI just returned from Hawaii and we rented a Nissan Kick while there. We drove all over that island for five days and use less than a half a tank of gas.
Me and both my friends were absolutely amazed at the gas mileage.
AnnetteSeveral companies have reward programs. Murphy gives points everytime one fills up. As a guess there are others.
Also, Costco and Sam’s have reduced fuel prices, one would have to do the math on the membership being worth it.
PatriciaSam’s and Costco have cheaper price and if you also get a credit card with them anything charged earns a percentage rebate yearly.
JudeIf you work for someone else, are they reimbursing you? If you work for yourself, can you get a tax deduction?
Kimberlyif you use google maps to get to your destinations it has a gas savings setting. also, there is an app where you can get cash back on your gas purchases.
sorry! I cant remember the name of it right now… ugh! sorry!
KayeIf you can plan a route where you have multiple stops in the same area. Can you also do some personal errands on those same routes to save yourself a trip?
How well do you the know the routes you travel?
If there is an accident or very heavy traffic, do you know a couple of alternate routes that might be slower travel but don’t have you idling in bumper to bumper at a standstill?
What about the car?
Does it need a tuneup?
Francessare you putting your gas purchases on a credit card? it’s not all that much but you can use your accumulated points to pay yourself back and reduce your total gas bill.
SkaggsSam’s club credit card gives you 5% cash back which is Sam’s cash at any gas station up to $6000.00 per year.
you can use the Sam’s cash to make purchases in store or online or you can go to member services desk and cash out your Sam’s cash for actual cash.
Sam’s cash never expires.
