Our insurance has always been high because my daughter has four citations. Recently, we took one of our cars off the road which made our insurance go up over $700 a month because we lost the multi car discount.
We obviously couldn’t handle that. I called our insurance company and discovered if we added renters insurance for $10 a month, our premium would go to more like $434 a month.
I also looked at my coverages and reduced some of those.
We were also able to get one of her citations removed. Thought
I would share this in case any of you are in this situation.
DonnaThat happened to me too. Removed a car from my insurance because it wasn’t running and my insurance went up.
Looks like the insurance agent I’ve had for 30 years would have told me that would happen.
HeidyAlways good to shop insurance. Also, what coverages did you drop? Make sure you are still well protected
GuillenThis is why I keep an old 2008 suv sitting in my driveway (out of the way) that doesn’t get driven on my insurance with liability.
My teen driver is listed as the driver.
Yes, insurance company knows…one of their perks is they put the teen driver on cheapest vehicle to insure but of course they are covered on all.
LynneThis has been a hot minute. My oldest was a dum dum to. Insurance went insane.
I talked to a new insurance office and they stated if he had his own policy things would decrease.
Side not you should already have home owners or renters so why are they suggesting adding renters for 10.?
Adjust stuff to much will make it even more challenging when you need it later. 500 to 1000 out of pocket for a copay would break people.
RebeccaTell her to get her own insurance or else charge her with a proportionate cost
ConnieHow old is your daughter? If she’s over 18 she needs to get her own insurance policy. If she’s under 18, take her to DMV and turn in her drivers license.
Get documentation that she turned them in and is no longer eligible to drive, take that to the insurance company company and remove her from the policy.
ShonThe amount of money that you’re paying in car insurance could be a mortgage on your own home.
Your home should be your biggest expense not your vehicles.
SusanI was an auto insurance agent for fifteen years. It never hurts to review your policy with your agent to see if you are missing any discounts or still paying for tickets and accidents.
Tickets and accidents are only rated for three years, but if the policy is in force it won’t be removed until the renewal–unless you ask!
Some rating factors, like getting married or buying a home, even your education level, can affect your rate.
SkylaI’m guessing your kid is still an actual kid. The minute I had a job insurance was my own responsibility which didn’t stop me from getting all my speeding tickets but it made me weigh the cost to decide of a little fun was worth it (which being young and dumb it was worth it to me).
If she has a job I’d say let her take care of her own insurance at a minimum cause that’s such a basic responsibility of growing up she’s gotta learn sometime.
I get wanting to help but unless you’re in a good financial spot it may be best to let her figure it out.
DebbieI use State Farm and my 3 sons have had their own policies since they were 16 years old UNDER my multi- policy.
Which means only their premium goes up if they have an accident.
Check and see if this is an option for you.
CoryI hope you didn’t reduce the liability coverage, young driver multiple incidents, you need higher limits…if an accident exceeds you limits you could lose any asset you own
AmedioMy daughter has made choices that have put my own financial stability at risk. I’m rushing to get everything separated to protect myself.
I can’t get thru to her to make better choices.
