I just bought a dining room table and fabric chairs from marketplace. As we were driving the furniture home, my boyfriend mentioned they had a strong cooking odor on them.
I lost a bit of my sense of smell after getting Covid but I’m trying my best to get the smell out.
I tried wiping the wood down with cleaner and carpet cleaning the fabric parts.
What else can I do to get the smell out?
EmilyI bought a spray on Amazon for a smell on fabric before. I sprayed to saturation a few times and was gone.
It was clear and had no scent, check the reviews for the best one.
It will go away eventually. Nice chairs.
LisaBorrow or rent an upholstery cleaner that will clean them up good.
TammyThis might sound crazy, but I cut up a bunch of raw potatoes & placed them on plates around my moms apartment to remove years of cigarette smoke scent
JanetSit out in sun for a while. If that and cleaning them doesn’t work, you may have to change out fabric on the chairs.
Might also try the Febreeze fabric spray.
PatriciaRub vinegar on the material, don’t need to saturate it. Just wipe it w/ a somewhat wet cloth. Maybe try 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water first.
See if that works, then use more vinegar if the half and half doesn’t work.
Try it on a small area of the cloth to make sure it doesn’t damage, fade the material.
Use Murphy’s oil soap for the wood.
MelodieClean the wood with murphy’s oil soap.spray odor ban on the seats let air outside if possible.
Make sure you clean underneath also.
SheilaMix baking soda, peroxide and a couple drops of dawn in a spray bottle….spray surface, and let dry in the sun in possible..
wipe with a damp cloth ….repeat if necessary…
there ae some new products out there,, Poof spray is said to eliminate ALL odors..
KarenSpritz lightly with diluted white vinegar and sit outside for as long as possible.
RoxieCan you sit them outside in the sun, to air out also? This might help.
JenMake sure you are also cleaning the underneath of the table! Sometimes we forget about that area
MarleneIt’s very easy to recover them. That’s about the only way you’re going to get rid of the smell is to use new fabric and new padding.
LindaOdad ban is a great spray on fabric spray that will reset the smell
SusanCheap vodka sprayed on fabrics. I’m not sure you could spray it on finished wood, since it could ruin the finish.
You could probably spray it on the underside of the table & chair seats.
If there is a greasy residue from cooking (which may not be visible) ammonia is a cheap & powerful degreaser.
I’m not sure how ammonia would affect the finish/varnish/poly on wood.
RitaMy Pet Peed will get out all kinds of odors. No scrubbing. Just apply as it turns into an oxygen bomb.
MichelePut several boxes of open baking soda near it or open a can of coffee grounds, they both neutralize and absorb smells.
Did you scrub underside also.
If you reseal it, one coat of varnish
SarahCan you set them out in direct sunlight? Sun is a natural deodorizer.
CherylCan always shake baking soda over material (leave for a few days) vacuum…
DeniseRedo the fabric seats. Remove all padding to the bare bones. Clean the wood with Murphys oil soap.
KelliCharcoal.. Activate it with vanilla… Place a lil bowl on the seat and wrap plastic around it… Leave it for a day or so
PascalTurn the chair upside down with the fabric seat resting on a tray of silica gel cat litter.
It will remove odors.
And, the silica gel can be reused indefinitely.
KyleTake the fabric seats off and actually soak the seats in soap and water, then rinse using lots of cold water. Stand up so water can drain.
Wash all the wood with dawn dish soap and vinegar.
1 to 2 tablespoons of Dawn maybe 1/4 cup of vinegar to a bucket of very warm water, then rinse using cold water.
Do all of this outside on a cool, sunny day or if really hot, do in shade!!
I use my hose with a spray nozzle to rinse. Let dry completely and use a good oil base polish on the wood.
Have used this method for years!!
