Me and my significant other completely disagree with temperature in the house. He wants it very cold, I want to leave it hotter.
To save money, I’d like to put in a window AC for his bedroom only while leaving the central AC off.
Have you saved money using a window AC over leaving the central AC off?
I read a lot of conflicting information online on how energy efficient the window AC’s are.
LauraMy parents set the a/c at “barely comfortable” in the main living areas, but morgue cooler cold in their bedroom via their window unit.
They turned the bedroom a/c on after dinner and turned it off when they got up for the day.
I have to admit – I’m of an age now that this sounds like a delightful idea.
JennyWe moved into a place with central air, ran it for 1 month, saw the cost and put in a window ac in a central area in the house.
Definitely cheaper for us, this summer we have 2 window acs because my spoiled rotten 3 year old sleeps super hot so his room got one and it’s still cheaper than the central air.
That said we run fans everywhere, use the ac to make it bearable in the main area.
The kiddos ac runs at 73 only at night and only if there’s no hope of the outside temp cooling his room.
LilyAbsolutely I use the window shaker for my bedroom if I want it colder, it’s much more cost-effective than running the whole AC
LanaSave money some other way and keep the house comfortable for your husband.
If you are cold, you can put on extra layers, but there’s no way to get comfortable if the house is too hot.
ChanellOne window ac is not burning nearly the amount of electricity as a whole house HVAC.
HannahI run my ac warmer and we have ac unit that sits on the floor and just the hose is in the windows and it’s efficient it’s saves me money and keep our bedroom cooler at night.
It may cost like 30 dollars a month at the most.
ShonMy AC went out about 10 years ago and I’ve had two window ACs ever since and my bill is less now than it was 10 years ago when my AC was working.
ElizabethThis is exactly what my husband and I do… We put a window unit in our bedroom so we can sleep in the chill zone…
Makes no sense to cool the whole house at night just so we can sleep cool
ChristinaWe’ve never had central air, only window units. We have one in each room but only keep the big one on constantly and set at 66-68.
We turn on a big fan to blow the cooler air around if we don’t want to turn the other ones on.
PollyI put mine on 62- otherwise I’m on fire. I couldn’t imagine turning it off in the rest of the house with only a window unit
LuluEh, window a/c can be more trouble than they’re worth sometimes.
Checklist:
Is the hot person taking a cold rinse off at least twice a day?
Is your insulation plentiful and efficient? Are your vents and ducts clean and efficient?
Is your HVAC system aging?Do you have good thick curtains?
Nothing blocking flow from vents?Rugs can help insulate.
In a bigger space you might curtains off less used spaces.MarshaWe set ours at 77 and leave it there. But we don’t turn it off all summer.
TristiaOur house unit was out for about two weeks. We ran two window units and our bill was less.
MaryOur central unit died and we can’t afford to replace it. We have window units in bedroom, living room and dining room. A portable unit if needed in any other room.
We also use ceiling and floor fans as needed. Our home is cool. I wear a little jacket most of the time.
Our bill is half of what it used to be.
My biggest complaint is the noise and the loss of my windows.
LauraIf you turn the a/c off completely, your house will get humid – keep it on, but raise the temp so it runs less often
RobrayOur central broke last year. We used two window units and our electric bill went down from the previous year.
We supplement with ceiling fans too.
Either our central unit was crap or newer window units are pretty efficient.
MeganI think it’s harder on ac to be off then try to match temp. Maybe turn up but I would cut off unless only using windows for days at a time.
Black out curtains your best friend
VirginiaIt depends on the location of the room you’re cooling and the sun exposure. Have you covered the windows from outside?
Is it on the second floor?
In an older home, heat can really stack up on the second floor.
EstesIn Tennessee with the heat and awful humidity we have had the best experience with our HVAC unit.
We have tried both. Our central unit circulates air much better too.
Our electric bill has been much less with the central unit. Just our experience in this area.
SandraWe live in Texas so a window unit would melt and run the electric bill up more than our ac unit.
We have extra insulation in the attic plus foam insulation up in the rafters, Also an ionizer is a big help too.
We keep the temperature in the daytime at 74° and night time 68° year round. Ceiling fans always running.
