Ideas please! I needed a single onion to make salsa but received a bag. I don’t want them to go to waste, but what can I do with them?
I’m afraid if I chop and freeze they will become mushy.
KatherineGoogle blooming onion recipe and it gives you instructions on doing one, two or three onions.
ElaineOnions freeze very nicely for frying or general cooking, I don’t know about putting them raw in a salad or something but if you just use them for cooking it’s a great idea.
I received a HUGE bag of onions and diced half, sliced the other half, and froze them.
You don’t have to blanch or cook them in anyway beforehand, just toss them in a freezer bag and they’ll be good.
JolieI would dice them
Up flash freeze them on a cookie sheet and then I would put them in one cup increments in baggies and your freezer so you can grab them and make soup or whatever you need to out of themBrendaI wrap the onions individually in paper towels and store them not touching each other in a dry cool place.
I have had them to last for months but I do check on them to make sure they are not going bad.
SherriThe frozen ones are perfect for cooking. It’s great to have them already chopped for recipes.
StevaChop, put them in a single layer and flash freeze them quickly put them in a freezer bag tooodaaaa:)
LynnWe love French Onion soup. You could cook down and freeze in portions for the next batch of soup.
It’s so great when you’re sick to be able to quickly get to the soup without much work
SaraYou’re 100% OK!
Just chop and freeze them however you like in a zip lock bag, write a date on them and use them to cook the same way you would use them as though you’ve bought frozen onions from the grocery store. No worries babe, just stash them away and they’re good for at least another year.
You can make granulated onion powder by drying thick onion rings very slowly at a low temperature in the oven on a piece of parchment and then whirring the rings in a food processor to make a powder.
KathyChop up and freeze in small snack bags. This way you can instantly add to meals being prepped. I dice up onions, celery and various colored bell pepper for Trinty packs and freeze.
Mix all together and freeze in 1 cup packs to add to meals I am preparing.
Easy and cuts down on prep time.
TrishYou can wrap each one in paper (I use newspaper) and put them in the crisper drawer of your fridge. They’ll last for weeks, even months.
I do this all the time.
BeckyThey aren’t mushy frozen, as long as they weren’t mushy cutting them. I freeze them and use them in scrambled eggs, scrambled hamburg, homemade soup…
MariaCut up an onion and place a piece in every room of the house. This will keep you from getting sick
JamieI freeze them all the time. They won’t be good for using raw, like on a burger or in a salad after freezing, but will be fine cooked abd added to recipes.
BrendaI had my sister chopped onions for me while she was here. I have limited use of one hand so that that’s extremely difficult for me.
I keep them in my freezer for easy use when I need them to cook.
ScarletI used to buy frozen chopped onions from the supermarket so yes, they can be frozen.
DeborahSlice them thin and pop them into a crockpot with some butter. Cook on low for several hours until they are caramelized.
I freeze them in portions….great in meatloaf, on burgers, etc.
TracyI chop mine up and put them in the freezer for a very long time and then I just use them in product like in meat. When I’m cooking it.
Not only that but a bag of onions it’s going to last forever in a cool dark spot.
Sometimes I even keep mine in the refrigerator whole but you’ve got a few months
MicheleAdd them to Salads, stir fries, roasts and even fine sliced on a burger or in tuna salad.
they will last quite a while in the fridge
SnehalThinly slice the onions, fry till golden brown, squeeze out excess oil, dry and store.
They shall remain crisp and good for a month or two.
ValerieMake a big batch of caramelized onions! They can be used on burgers or hot dogs, or any meats really.
Also, on pizza & don’t forget quiches
DanettOnions have a huge shelf life as they are. Store in a dry cool place and they will last a few months.
Or as others have said you can freeze them.
KateI just got a 40# box of onions. Some get sliced, a bunch get diced – they go in the freezer. And the best looking, stay in the cold garage.
This is how I always handle onions!
AllisonSaute and freeze in small cubes and they’ll be ready anytime you need cooked onion.
You’re right frozen onions are mushy when they thaw.
NikkiI buy onion bell peppers in bulk. Takes me hours to cut it all. Place in gallon freezer bags.
Usually do 8-10 bags at a time. And use as needed.
No problems with mush.
