Why do my cats devour store bought cat broth at 1.35 for a 1 oz pouch but when I try to be frugal and make organic homemade chicken broth, they run away from it like it is poison?
I’ve noticed that my cats consistently choose store-bought broth over the homemade chicken broth I prepare for them.
While I make the homemade version using fresh ingredients and no seasoning, they seem less interested compared to when I offer them store-bought options.
Is it about the flavor, texture, or perhaps something else in the composition of the store-bought broth that appeals to them?
I’m curious to hear if anyone else has experienced this with their pets. Do cats have specific preferences for certain additives or flavors commonly found in commercial products?
Could there be a scent or ingredient in store-bought broth that’s especially enticing to them?
If you’ve faced something similar or have insights into why cats behave this way, I’d love to know your thoughts!
A RYeah, like it cooked down pretty thick. I cook kidneys, liver and heart of elk, deer, beef. I also cook turkeys for them.
I use the instant pot and then a food processor. I add fresh parsley, spinach and salt.
The old cats gobble it up! Currently serving elk lung and heart. They ate so much the first evening they skipped food the next day.
Just dozed by the wood stove purring.
DianaMy cat is now addicted to Delectables Bisque. My fault but she literally yells at me for it.
Someone called it kitty crack now I know why.
So, you’ve been warned. It’s not cheap Lol
PatriciaDon’t use garlic, onions and spices. The smell may be why because some things are bad for them.
PatriciaIt could be the store bought has added salt. My friends cat would like the salt off potato chips but leave the chips.
I doubt the salt is good for them
GardeningI put about a cup of rice and let it over cook, then add two cans of pate cat food.
It’s enough wet food to feed my colony of 9 for a week!
HeatherI found some for $.28 per ounce on Amazon. I had to Google the ingredients separately.
Chicken bone broth, carrot, apple, celery, dextrose, salt, yeast extract, tomato, arrowroot, and turmeric.
KristiI use either drumsticks or thighs. I bring it to a boil then turn it down to low. I add a capful of apple cider vinegar and a pinch of salt. I cook on low for 6-8 hours.
I add chicken liver and hearts the last 10 min.
Then I strain with a fine mesh strainer.
I pull the meat off, double check for bones and then blend the broth, liver, hearts and chicken together.
My cat goes crazy for it.
ElainMy cats responded to the sound of the can opener/swoosh sound of a pop top.
Try recording it and see if they come running for food!
PatriciaI do not give mine an option. They eat my good food or they starve.
CarolineTry getting regular chicken broth without salt at the grocery store.
