My best friend told me a budgeting trick several years ago. She would put a certain amount of money into a separate account each month to spend, budgeting a certain amount for each day.
Whatever she didn’t spend for a day or two would give her additional money on another day for lunch or dinner out, an occasional happy hour, etc.).
When she married and had kids, she started doing the same for her kids to spend when they were on vacation.
She let them know that if they didn’t spend anything for two or three days, they would have extra money to buy a special souvenir or something.
She did this year round so of course on weeks that she didn’t spend anything. It just turned into an amount that she could eventually transferred to her savings.
Sharing because it’s something that has worked for me.
AmyWhen I was first married in 95 we did the envelope method.
JohnsonA budget is a noun and a verb
You put into it how much you need for spending
Set an amount 20 a week 250 a week whatever it isIt’s a line in the budget
Yes, it rolls overAnisaYeah, I watched “Dad, How do it?” recently, he said give yourself an allowance in your budget. Never heard anyone doing that.
And I’m over here wondering how are you suppose to enjoy spending some money on things.
He just budgeted it as a monthly, but I would break it down too. Then whatever I don’t use I keep saving.
KristelHaving a discretionary allowance is critical… especially when paying down debt.
DebbieI spend zero most days. Bring my own coffee and lunch. My pay goes directly to my checking. Amazing how it grows.
When there is over a certain planned amount, I transfer to MMA and start growing checking account again.
When I need a large purchase or repair, no worries, the $$ is there.
I mostly spend $$ on gas for my car. I rarely shop; I have most everything I need.
I buy groceries, pay my utilities and taxes, hardly spend beyond that.
FrancessI don’t break it down to how much I can spend per day but I do budget 5% of all income per month for discretionary spending.
