Don
I’ve heard that many pursuing FI become millionaires in their late 40s.
I’m curious, at what age do folks most become work optional or at what age would you like to be work optional?
I know it varies and there’s a lot of factors.
DavidI hit FatFIRE at 38 and retired. Turning 40 next month. These last two years flew by way too fast.
EvelyneGiven that our number is 3.5M and we started late I’m hoping for 55. Because of that we slowed down a bit our saving rates to be able to enjoy life more
MonaI want to retire by 45 and I’m currently 41. If I’m able to keep my current high paying job it’s a realistic goal but if not then I’ll be working until 55 atleast.
As a result I’m trying my best to keep my current job so I can be free from the rat race in a couple years
RodI made work an option at 55 when the serious amount of bullshit endured outweighed my need for money.
MoniqueI’ll be work optional at 48 as long as I can keep doing what I’ve been doing.
LeonaA lot of factors at play but if I stay the course I could lean FIRE at 45, 48 would be optimal but may hang in to help my kids get a better footing (see them through college)
Aaron“What age do most” and also “I know it varies a lot” – you’re asking for the median age of something that’s highly variable.
Most of the population won’t become work optional until they qualify for social security.
In an FI crowd, most will become work optional somewhere in their 50’s. Personally I’ll be work optional about 5 years from now around 50.
If you have a very high savings rate, passive income streams or expect to have low expenses then that could push into your 40’s.
Some extreme outliers could make it work in their 30’s.
SerenaAt 30 Net Wealth (including primary residence) was $125k, millionaire at 39, work optional at 44, though continue to work.
Final chapter to include the RE is scheduled for 46 when my youngest child will be out of college.
Currently selling off and giving away our stuff, and planning to live nomad around the country and world until we are sick of it.
ChristianCurrently at 30 I feel work optional. But I like the grind. I don’t think I’ll ever just stop working
DavidCurrently 42, so 45-47 for me. I could now but enjoying work too much to leave yet.
DougI hit 1M a few months ago at 36. Plan to FI around 50 when the kids are independent
GrahamI was 38 when I became work optional by reaching 2 million invested. This allowed me to step away from my businesses and let them run themselves.
Knowing that I would be fine for expenses and life goals if I didn’t make any more money off of my businesses allowed me to keep them but not work in them.
MikeI could retire right now (39, on the cliff of 40…) but I’d have to dial back some parts of lifestyle more than I prefer.
I have a pretty amazing job right now I couldn’t see myself walking away from or losing before 42.
But, I’ve promised myself my 45th birthday gift is a Armgnac collection from my birth year and stepping back from a full time job.
Zchry38 and will achieve FI in 2 or 3 years if nothing big happens. I plan to keep working after 41, but only part time.
AmandaIf I didn’t want to assist my 4 children with college it would be much sooner. However, our goal is work optional at 52.
This gets all 4 of them through college.
KayI’m planning to stay at my job until 55- that’s the earliest I can retire with my health insurance for life benefit.
EvaFor me it was asap without compromising experiences that pay memory dividends. It ended up being mid 30s in a VHCOL.
This includes prepping for childs college and key life events etc.
RickI’m 39. Plan to retire by 45 once I’ve secured two different pensions that I need to work X number of years for.
Meanwhile, I’ll be aiming to significantly increase net worth by then to ensure I won’t have to return to the rat race once retired.
