I’m planning to retire early at the age of 52, but I’m trying to understand the financial implications—especially when it comes to health insurance. My biggest concern is covering health insurance for my entire family.

We are a family of six: myself, my spouse, and four teenagers. Thankfully, we’re all generally healthy with no major medical conditions.

Since I won’t have employer-sponsored insurance after retirement, I’m looking into options on the open market or through the ACA (Affordable Care Act).

I’m based in the U.S. and wondering what kind of monthly or annual premiums we should expect.

I know the costs can vary widely by state, income level, and coverage type, but I’d really appreciate hearing from others who are in a similar situation or who have gone through early retirement with a large family.

How much should I realistically budget for health insurance if I want to retire at 52 with teenagers still at home?

Any insights, advice, or personal experiences would be helpful.

It depends on a couple different factors. Age, health, location, and current financial circumstances.

I’m a broker. You can feel free to reach out to me for a couple of free quotes, so you can at least get a more specific idea of what you’d be looking at and to have a more detailed goal in mind to take action towards.

Congrats on thinking ahead! For a healthy family of 6, private health insurance could cost anywhere from $1,500–$2,500/month depending on where you live and the coverage you choose.

You might also qualify for subsidies if your retirement income is lower.

It’s definitely smart to factor $18k–$30k a year into your early retirement plan.

Talking to a health insurance agent can help you get a better idea for your situation!

Do you need to put them through College?? College Education costs 60 to 80 K a year unless you have cheap instate school.

Depending on your circumstances, it can cost as little as zero. You may have more flexibility in your income in retirement so if you can set it low enough you may qualify for enough ACA subsidy to pay your entire premium.

It’s regional. Go on the marketplace site and see what’s available for you.

We pay $1550/month for a couple only, and, it’s gone up 18% to 25% every year.
