Did you know Americans throw out billions of pounds of food annually? Enough to fill the Rose Bowl to the brim 2 times. Let’s stop food waste. Spoiled food costs money and emits poisonous gas. (Methane).

I requested on my local Buy Nothing for people to post leftover meals and food they won’t be able to use up.

I’ve gotten soup and a pot roast meal. I also request if I need a potato, (got a bag!) tomato, bell pepper etc on Buy nothing.

Am usually gifted because people say they won’t be using it.

It’s food I don’t want to drive 5 miles to the store when I forgot to get!

I always get the potatoes I plant from my Buy Nothing group. People are always happy to pass along that bag of sprouted potatoes sitting in the back of their cupboard.

I love the Too Good to Go app for this reason, it helps with resturart waste on things that expire that or the next day.

Sadly most 80% or more of American food waste is pre-consumer.

I have very little waste but the waste I do have gets prepared for the chickens:)

It’s even worse in hotels, restaurants, and grocery stores. The food waste is obscene. My spouse is in hospitality.

The amount of food and quality furniture just dumped in the trash is infuriating.

I tracked our food waste in 2024. For the entire year it was under $5. It became a hobby.

I even used the oil from fish frying.

I’ve gotten lots of food items from the local Buy Nothing group over the years! It’s a lifesaver for me and my budget! It’s not something everyone would do, but I’m good with it.

It’s amazing what people give away on there!!!

In addition to food for me, I’ve gotten cat food and litter, and household supplies!

I also have now and then gotten food from the Too Good To Go app, and tho it costs some money, it gives a variety in my diet.

My problem: the fruit and the veggies. Now I try to process, freeze, cook and freeze, store in water, store in fridge not counter if appropriate etc.

Having a list of menu items helps too. For instance I write salad for dinner in Monday so the salad I bought doesn’t go to waste.

Leftovers get written in there too or frozen.

Or then for work lunch. Sadly though I still have to get better at this.

My son had a whole bunch of birthday cake and ice cream leftover from a party. He posted on Buy Nothing and that day 2 different people came over and snapped it right up.

I never would have thought of that. I just would have tossed it because all that sugar is not good for me!

Our neighbour as a kid use ti call my mom and ask if we wanted things. We got cake, homemade buns and treats. No waste and we would rush over to get those leftovers.

She was a cake maker, so we got the pieces she cut to make level or different shapes in her bakery

Get idea. I give foods to family members before it goes bad. Cooked food I heat and give to the homeless.

The worst is schools!!!! Even packaged food needs to be thrown out of kids don’t eat it, and they have to be given it.

I have cut back drastically on food my family wastes by meal planning and only buying what I need for the week.

I try to estimate the leftovers that I can repurpose in other meals, like leftover meat into soups/ refried rice. But this is a great idea!

I never waste food at my house, but there is NO way I’m eating food from a stranger’s house.
