I finally have a few minutes to share my excitement with the community. A couple of weeks ago, I took the last step to move to Pico Island in the Azores. It’s a beautiful, low-key island to live in.

There were a bunch of reasons why this move made sense. I’ll mention the first three:

The cost of living in the US was too much to upkeep.

I didn’t want to wait for retirement. I had three close friends who died of cancer a year before or a year after they retired.
I needed an environment that wasn’t neurotic and anxious, such as the Northeast.

We have been able to afford this move with $400K in investments. I have been acquiring real estate mortgages since 2021.

They have been paying a 10% – 12% annual yield. These investments were enough for me to quit my job at the end of 2023 and focus on the logistics of the move in 2024.

I am excited to share the following things we’ve traded since the move:

      $1,800 1 Bedroom apartment for 400 euros
$30 breakfast for two to 7 euros.
$40 lunches for two to 13 euros.
$15 wine bottles to 3 euros.
$1,300 car insurance to 90 euros.
      $500 medical insurance to free.

Car maintenance 4 times a year to once a year.
I’ll stop here, but feel free to ask me for more examples.

Now that all US expenses are gone, except for a small storage unit and a mailbox, these investments will give us the runway to settle in 2025.

By the way, it really helps that my wife was raised here. Also, working at the grocery store, the locals and tourists love her vibes.

In the meantime, I am getting caught up with our personal finances and business tasks. Next, I’ll get back to studying for my AWS Developer Certification. Once I get my residence permit, I’ll be able to look for work in the EU—I really miss web development!

I am curious, are you Portuguese by heritage? Just going by your name. I assume your wife speaks Portuguese by the fact that she was raised there. Do you speak the language?

I wonder how hard it is for someone to make the move without some fluency.

I have heard that Portuguese is harder to learn than Spanish. Congrats on the move.

        Sounds fantastic!

Did you leave family behind in the states? I’m hesitant to move by myself, and leave siblings and son.

Would you mind sharing is the $400k in investments the real estate or instead stock market style asset classes? If the latter, any issue now or later seen for holding these?

Congrats to you both for striking out on a new adventure in your lives together!!

Congratulations! Quick question – when you say that you have been ‘acquiring real estate mortgages’ do you mean you’ve been real estate investing or is this a different type of investment?

The azores are special! My great grandparents immigrated from Sao Miguel! Congrats!

When you say you’ve been acquiring mortgages, are you talking about buying tax liens?

If not, where do I learn about buying mortgages?

Lost a dear friend to cancer. Life is too short to plan ahead sometimes.

                      If I visit Azores
I would love to say hi!

What is your Insta? I would love to see how it goes there. Thinking of a similar move in the future.

My grandparents used to live on Faial and I’d visit them as a kid. Their house had an awesome view of Pico and I’ve wanted to go back someday.

                          Congratulations!!

Love this I have a few questions.
-What are your projected annual expenses there?

-How are you getting free medical coverage without being a resident?

How is food that cheap on an island? Everything has to be shipped or flown there?

That’s a big reason most people don’t move to vacation places like the Bahamas

Congratulations! We lived on the island of Terceira from 2001-2003. I was flight attendant and was able to visit some of the other islands while there.

                                Such a beautiful laidback lifestyle.

The crazy thing is I am a raising my son as a worldschooler and have traveled a lot, but I didn’t know anything about these islands, somehow they were not on my radar!

Curios to know more for sure!
