When filing my 2023 taxes, I discovered that for the past several years I was not taking full advantage of some deductions available to me, resulting in some money left on the table.
I amended my return for 2020, which was received by the IRS on April 2, and they are still processing it, 8 months later (they say it can take up to 16 weeks to process).
The past four times I have called, they have only told me that they have transferred the amended return to another department for further verification (or something like that), and I can call back in 30 days.
If I call back before the 30 day mark, the clock starts over. They can give me no further information or any idea when they will be done.
Needless to say, I am starting to see red. It’s enough money that I don’t want to walk away from it, and I can amend 2021 and 2022 to get similar amounts back.
Is there any prodding that can make the tax behemoth move?
PatrickAmended returns basically go to the bottom of the pile. I’ve been waiting on one for about 5 months.
ChristopherI’d do the amendments now, and then just wait. It takes a long time sometimes.
AngelaGo ahead and amend the others and just wait. I mean you’ve waited 3+ yrs to start with so why be in such a hurry now?
It’s the IRS. It’s going to take awhile and now it’s about to be Jan….
CheryI have seen it take over a year. No, you can not make them go faster. I doubt anyone is working on it right now, they are getting ready for the 2024 taxes
LaI’ve been waiting on one since May. I have a tax advocate that’s supposed to be helping but she’s on vacation until after the new year.
TimAmend 2021 and 2022 now. Call the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Services to see if you can get assistance.
Similarly, they’ll give you updates every 30 days but they’ll have access to see where it is and be able to reach out to IRS to try to resolve it
EricSince 2020, processing an amended return in under a year is great, unfortunately.
