Anyone start annuals and perennials from seeds and have their own little side nursery business as a side hustle?

What would I need to do if I wanted to start something like this and do it legit instead of under the table…?

Any insurance? Do I need an LLC? Etc?

Any insight would be helpful! I work in landscaping so deal with a lot of gardens where I can also take out plants that have reseeded and aren’t wanted.

I’m not sure about the legality of taking seeds and starters from others. Plant patents are a thing. I’m not sure it’s legal to propagate and sell all varieties.

This probably isn’t enforced much but there are some crazy laws out there.

On a small scale I think the profit is probably with higher dollar stuff.

Let Walmart sell the 6 pack flats. Hanging baskets and large mums do really well. Many perennials are easy to grow and propagate.

They are less work to take care of. Do you have a greenhouse or just outside?

You should connect with your local Extension office or if there is a college or university near you that has an Extension Service, they can put you on the right track.

They can help you choose which high tunnel you should get, help set up an automatic watering system with timers, they will guide you on how to market in your area and so on.

If you don’t have any of the above reaources, do any of your local schools have a Furture Farmers of America group?

If so, connect with the teacher. The teacher, students and the people in the paragraph above this one all run in the same circles.

The amount of knowledge, skill and experience they have will most certainly put you on the right track to get started, how to effectively do it in bulk and what to be cautious of.

          Good luck!

Broker here and I can speak to the insurance part. General liability, worker’s comp, property, inland marine or a combo of them are some of the coverage a nursery business might need (you might already have some for your landscaping business).

The type and combo depends on several factors and structure of your business.
