How do I correctly convert VOO to VTI? I invested in VOO in my ROTH IRA but later I learned VTI is better since it has mid and small cap.
Does anyone know how do I correctly switch from VOO to VTI?
Currently has 20 voo shares
BetsyIf it is in an IRA, you can simply sell VTI and purchase VOO with the proceeds. This is a tax sheltered account, so selling VTI will not have any tax implications.
With that said, the two ETFs are very similar and produce similar results.
DennyYou’ve got your answer that it is just a matter of selling one and buying the other, but I’ll chime in and say I’d rather have VOO over VTI.
Performance is similar with an edge to VOO.
Keep in mind they are cap weighted, so those small companies in VTI have very little influence on the performance of VTI.
FenbersWithin a Roth, you can just sell one fund and buy the other without any penalties.
I personally have VTI in my Roth IRA as well
HeatherVTI and VOO have effectively identical returns over their history. They are so similar they are often used as tax loss partners in brokerage accounts.
In a ROTH you can do the switch with no tax consequences but having VOO is generally fine either way.
