I just negotiated my annual contract as I always do, and realized that in the five years I’ve been at my company, my pay has increased 157%.
Mostly due to taking promotions up to manager and then negotiating at every opportunity.
The me two years ago wouldn’t have had the confidence to negotiate. Just take the 3%-5% they offer.
Advocate for yourself. Know your worth. Even if you have to bring up the rising cost of eggs.
KatieI’m sure this is dependent on your work place. As a manager someone could try to negotiate their raise but it won’t change anything.
By the time I’ve communicated their raise it’s already gone up the chain and been approved as is, I don’t have the ability to increase it.
JasonEven professors can do this. Go and get an offer elsewhere – with tenure – at the very highest pay band. Rinse. Repeat.
We all need to insist on demanding being paid our worth if we’re working at a 140% capacity every day!
Well done!
NobleThis approach just doesn’t translate well in healthcare. During my evaluation, I was promised a promotion, but instead, I received more responsibilities without a raise.
I’ve been with the organization for five years, and although I’ve updated my resume, the job market feels saturated right now.
It’s frustrating to see less dedicated individuals earning more, while I continue to give my best—mainly because I genuinely care about patient outcomes.
Still, I can’t help but feel that one day I might just walk away, especially since I’m fortunate enough to be financially stable.
MiaYES. This! Up 211% since 2021. Most recently getting $195k base for a job with a posted range of $140 – $160k. The listing is NOT the reality.
Game plan is use from my two recruiter sisters:
1. Lay out why you’re the best fit for the role / promotion and everything you’re motivated to bring to the company.2. Tell them the number you would be thrilled to say yes to right now, then
3. IMPORTANT: *stop talking.* Force the awkward silence. They are thinking about it, you already reset the game.”
4. Kick ass
5. Repeat every 6-12 months
I used to feel physically sick to my stomach at the idea of negotiating.
It’s incredibly uncomfortable at first but now it feels totally matter-of-fact. Just try it once.
