Hello Frugal family! I came to y’all for advice a few months back and thanks to y’all I enrolled in school!! Thank you for giving me the courage to do so!

I’m a first generation college student! I’m looking to get into the medical field. Any advice on supplies I might need besides notebooks, pen and a laptop?

Also any scholarships? In going to a community college.

      Thank you so much

the biggest college tip I can give you is to maximize your use of the resources that are all around you at the school. go to the library and look at the books.

you might find surprises in there, my community College even had a really small children’s book area.

I have never heard of a school that didn’t have free tutoring in math and English, maybe more skills. show up even with something small.

show up at your teachers office hours and introduce yourself to them too.

and most important, show up to as many classes as possible!!! raise your hand and ask questions!

making A’s isn’t always easy, but many times it’s simple: show up to class every day, do your best on every assignment, and if there’s something you don’t understand or didn’t do as well as you’d like, use the resources that are all around you and improve that skill.

you’ll be shocked how many students don’t do those basics and then wonder how come they are failing.

school supplies are a simple business. you need a thumb drive/flash drive… doesn’t have to be a big one. make backup copies of all your assignments and essays and etc, even if it’s just emailing to yourself, it’ll really save your bacon. you don’t need to buy software.

if your school doesn’t supply Microsoft office or similar then download Libre Office.

your basic pens, pencils, highlighters and notebooks will do just fine. use things and you’ll figure out what you prefer fast.

Some jobs will assist with paying for part of tuition.
Some government run employment agencies pay for a couple of health professions.

Consider working for a company that you would like to work with when you get out of school.

Some schools post jobs for companies looking for students.
Visit your financial aid office. Apply for scholarships.

If you are young, consider joining a branch of the military. They will give you a job when you get out, assist with education cost, etc.

The military will make going to college a lot easier as you are not worrying about paying for basic bills.

For the health profession, try to get all A’s. Use the tutoring center. Be sure and purchase the software that goes with each book so you can have some interactive help.

Some online services, give you fast summaries of the important stuff in an easy and fast way to assimilate the data. Use these services to make your studies easier.

Also, take advantage of volunteering/getting experience in your field at your school through their connections if you opt to not sign up in a branch of the military.

For scholarships, look for local or state ones and any that are offered through your college. The national ones are much much harder to get.

Not saying that it can’t be done, but my school was 100% paid for because I focused on the ones I felt like I had a better shot at.

Your college should have something like a scholarship or financial aid office.

At my school scholarships were even posted online.
