We are going through a rough patch financially.
We are thinking about cutting dental insurance ($170 per month)

For major things (that have happened twice in 6 years) we have gone abroad anyways.

My husband is still worried about emergencies (that can always happen).

We have been living in the States for 6 year, so are not experts on how the system works.

      Thoughts? Experiences?

      TIA!

That is SO expensive for dental, I would cut it and put that money into a separate account – and treat it as emergency savings.

Check to see how much the maximum yearly coverage is for your policy.

Sometimes the max per person is about the same as your premium.

Save that money and go to Mexico if you have any dental issues. Get the work you need done plus a vacation for a fraction of what you’re charged in the US.

Our family lives here and cleaning are $30US.

My husband just had 6 amalgam fillings removed and replaced for around $100US total.

Ask your dental practice if they have a discount plan. Usually, it’s a pretty low annual fee that covers certain things.

For a more extensive dental issue you can go to a dental school for excellent work at a lower price

Every time I do the math on dental insurance, it’s rarely worth it. I think it’s worth it if you know you have major work on the horizon.

Otherwise just pay for two cleanings a year out of pocket and you’ll save money

How much work per year does that cover? Most have a low cap so not worth it. Do you have any work that needs done?

Dental emergencies usually come from neglected care.

If your teeth have been cared for and your latest x-rays do not show work to be done I would drop it.

Also, that is a high cost for dental insurance so if you want to keep that kind of insurance I would shop around.

Dental insurance is known for being terrible. Almost a scam in some cases. High premiums, too many coverage limits, and very low maximum payouts per year.

Better to save and pay cash for dental.

Sorry.. why did you moved here…
Only the 1% pay for dental.

We floss and use mouth wash

I pay out of pocket for cleanings every 6 months, its $175 for cleaning. Or $436 for cleaning with xray.

That’s a lot. Ask your dentist if they have any plans. I’ve got bc/bs, but my dentist mentioned something that’s like $99/year and might be better.

I haven’t had dental insurance in 15+ years and never paid for anything more than regular cleanings and X-rays.

You don’t need insurance, just pay out of pocket.

Price out your cleanings that price is crazy. We pay $13 a month for 3 of us.
