Hello, my spouse bought a house on his name after 15 years of marriage. What are my options, if we get a divorce?
what are my legal or financial options regarding ownership or rights to the property?
I’m curious about what steps others have taken in similar situations or what advice you’ve received. Did you find it necessary to seek legal counsel, or were there other ways to address this?
Your insights and experiences would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you
ScottDepends on the state you live in. I was told in Michigan, didn’t matter that her name wasn’t on the deed.
It was half hers
ElizabethThis feels like such a red flag – do you know why he bought it in just his name?

Common property. My wife isn’t on any of our 4 properties or 4 cars. She would still get half
JasonOhio has dower rights on personal property whether you’re on the deed or not. If it’s in a LLC or other business entity then dower rights don’t apply.
JenniferSince you’re married, it would be community property. Laws could be different in Florida.
Here in CA you’d have rights to it as his wife regardless of on title
DeeSo, he bought another home using martial money without discussing it with you? Why? To house his mistress?
I can’t think of any other reason why a married man would buy another home without discussing it with his spouse, first.
RobbieBecause he used marital money then it’s half yours. Keep Good records For proof of where the money came from.
TaraIf it comes to divorce, You’ll need a good lawyer, like everyone else going thru it.
In the meantime be aware that you’re potentially loosing opportunity to build your credit history with the regular payments.
AdamAre you on title to the property? Was there a pre-nup? Also depends on the state.
