Gosh groceries have gotten expensive! I was blessed with a pressure canner for Christmas! I have never used one before but I’m super excited to try it out!

We are cutting our grocery budget way down and want to shop the sales as much as possible!

Hoping the pressure canner will help us utilize the sale priced meats and veggies!

Would love to hear tips and tricks and your favorite recipes or items to pressure can!

Use wide mouth jars when possible, so much easier to deal with. Do not buy jars from Amazon unless you get extremely lucky.

In my experience here in Oklahoma it’s much cheaper to purchase from my local grocery store or even Walmart.

Not even buying them new or used from Marketplace is cheaper.

Buy Ball Canning and Preserving Book as a starter. It will become your favorite. Based on my past experience, you will not save much your first year/season of canning based on expense of supplies and jars.

Search estate sales, Marketplace, thrift stores, buy nothing groups for canning jars and possible equipment which will save you so much.

Nothing more fulfilling than seeing your work stored for later use.

I almost flip out when I paid 1.29 for one lemon 🙂 and the best part? It not even organic I was busy with my son at checkout and there wasn’t any price tag/side.

I have been groceries at my local Asian stores, most of them cost around .39 cents and I though that is expensive so yea, shop at local grocery store if possible

The biggest piece of advice that I (an old woman who canned for more than 50 years) is this: Farm products auctions

Best prices for jars and lids are consistently found in our Farm & Fleet store, so check and compare at your local farm store.

When you can chicken do legs and thighs
Breast gets really dry and taste like canned chicken out of the metal cans

Sausage gets extremely salty and these days it’s salty enough
Add most flavoring/seasonings to canned meat when reheating.

It will intensify in taste when canned always can fof the item that takes to long

By example chicken is 90 min a quart. Soup 60 min /quart
Soup with chicken is 90 min

I have only canned meat so far, but the jars are also great to store fruit in the fridge.

No special work, just use them as storage when you aren’t using them for canning.

I pressure can beans, meat, squash, chili, stock/broth I make really anything.

I get jars anytime they are clearanced, from the Amish for my lids in bulk, garage sales etc.

Get the Blue Ball book it’s a great resource.

The first thing I ever pressure canned was pinto beans. They are nice to have ready in a jar for a quick meal or when the power goes out and you have limited ways to reheat.

I crumble up hamburger and cook it then can it in plain beef broth or water so it can be used in whatever I need it for.

Chicken breast, chili, veggie soup, leftover turkey, home made pizza sauce. The sky is the limit.

Do a lot of reading, print off a list of processing times, some basic equipment and have fun
