So I accidentally wrote state and federal taxes by writing checks against an old checkbook (financial instruction changed routing number and the routing number on the check is no longer valid).

I went on and paid both state and federal taxes with an online payment today aa soon as I realized.

However, now wondering what will happen and if I will be hit with any penalties.

It was an honest mistake being that I only write checks a few times a year:(

Have you called your bank? Maybe they will still pay the item if you explain the situation.

I know when banks merge, the old routing number is still valid.

(I work for a bank and we would try to help our customer if we could)

I would call your bank first… I had old checks from Chemical Bank (then merged to TCF) and I was able to use the old ones for several years.

The banks just knew to cross reference to the new number.

If it’s the first time, they may just give you a warning. I mean, you already paid online…

As others have said, possibly you can preemptively call the bank to void the check.

Additionally, you can possibly go online to pay the amount due through the federal/ state website.

If the tax bill is paid prior to the return processing date, perhaps the void check will become a non issue

The odds are in your favor that they won’t notice, or won’t care (only a few days after deadline, hiring freeze, limited staff).

You did the right thing. Don’t stress over it.

I don’t think they will string you up from the nearest tree or even send you to prison, but it is possible that all your children’s children will be born naked.

Check section 888.88 sub paragraph (g) where it states: Writing unnecessary bad checks on prepaid tax debt may be punishable with up to three (3) generations of offenders descendants being born without garments even if this a first offense.
