I am filing my taxes currently with turbo tax for the first year since my teenager has had a pt job. It asked me if he made over $5050.00.
He did with his job. Now it tells me I can’t claim him as a dependent.
Is that right?
KrisIf he’s a FT student between 19-24 then the amount earned doesn’t matter.
It’s only if they are not a FT student or over age 24.
VictoriaUse freetaxusa, never turbo tax. And it’s probably asking that because he needs to file his own return.
But just answer no and file your return claiming him, then have him file a return.
That’s the realistic answer for what you should do without all the tax jargon
KatrinaYou need to ck the box that says your dependent is a FT student. Then income doesn’t matter
ChantelTurboTax employee here. He is your dependent. He can file & mark that someone claimed him as a dependent if he paid any federal/state taxes in to get that amount back.
MaryIf you make over $160,000 married filing jointly, your kid could file their own taxes and claim the American opportunity credit and get up to $2500 refund back.
HollieNot specific to yourquestion, but I was going to use TurboTax this year to file free (normally only pay to file state, and I don’t do any upgrades), but at the end it was more than expected.
Ended up using a different filing program, refund amount (don’t worry–it was small) was the same, and filing costs were significantly lower. Just giving you a heads up in case you encounter this too.
