Does anyone have a good resource for Roth IRA’s and married couples?

My Mom’s accountant told her that she cannot contribute to her Roth because my Dad maxed his out and they file their taxes jointly.

This seems weird to me since they both work, shouldn’t she have her own Roth limit?

If they are filing jointly and their MAGI is over 240K, they may not contribute to Roth IRAs directly. They could do backdoor Roths.

It is NOT because your Dad maxed his out, though, unless they are in the phase out category just below the 240K limit.

Accountant tells parents (rarely accountant type people) who then say what they think they heard to you (usually not accountant type person either) and you can see how this means you really have no idea what the accountant said.

Tough spot to be in. But you can get back on track by simply helping your parents write an email stating what they thought they heard and asking for father clarification from the accountant.

Also AI tools like Grok are helpful with some basic research so give them a try too.

Were you in the original conversation, or could there be a game of telephone going on?

Odds are it’s an income issue.

Are your parents and thekr account familiar with Back Door Roth IRAs?
