The social comparison game is real, and at times a stumbling block. I constantly need to remind myself that my wife and I only need to live our own retirement.

Retirement is meant to be a time of relaxation and fulfillment, but many find themselves stuck in the trap of comparing their lifestyle, finances, or achievements with others.

Social media, casual conversations, and even family gatherings can trigger feelings of inadequacy or regret.

These comparisons often overshadow the unique joys of one’s own journey and prevent retirees from fully appreciating their hard-earned freedom.

To escape this trap, it’s essential to shift focus inward—toward personal values, goals, and daily joys.

Retirement isn’t a competition; it’s a deeply personal phase of life that should be shaped by what brings individual peace and purpose, not by what others are doing.

I thought of this today.
Over the years, I can recall pulling up to friends nice homes in our Honda Civic. We would be surrounded by giant new SUVs.

We were committed to being debt free and leaving below our means but I could not help but feel a little bit of envy.

Well, left full time work in December 2023 at 56.
The sacrifices were small as I look back.

Comparison is the thief of your joy. I was told this many years ago and it stuck with me.

I now apply this thought in all areas of my life, not just material things and/or finances.

Keep in mind a lot of it is an illusion. You may see a couple on an extravagant vacation and it looks like they’re living their best life.

But we’re not there to see behind the curtains.

Might be in huge debt but living YOLO mode.

I hear you. We live in a relatively low cost of living area and everything is paid for.

The amount we need is way less than many others.

Morgan Housel either makes the statement, or quotes someone else who does when he makes a point regarding the nature of comparison and its inability to ever end if you play it.

He said, “Put it like this.

If Warren Buffet woke up tomorrow with Oprah’s money, he may jump off a bridge.” It is all relative!!
