Thoughts on government jobs? Is it better to stay in the private sector? I am interviewing for a city job that has a similar salary to my current one, however not sure if it’s worth it.

Choosing between a government job and a private sector career can be challenging.

Government roles often promise stability, benefits, and work-life balance, while private sector jobs are known for dynamic growth opportunities, competitive pay, and innovation-driven environments.

What do you think is the better choice and why? Are stability and security more important, or do you value rapid career growth and flexibility?

Government jobs tend to offer excellent current and long term benefits. I will retire with a full pension and insurance for life.

I also have free health insurance now plus my employer gives money to our HSA to use for medical expenses.

We also accrue ample leave time that can be taken or saved to use for early retirement.

The benefits make a job for me.

All depends on the industry you are in. For me it’s way more beneficial to work for a contractor that does government work.

The pensions are similar but my pay is more than double that of my government counterpart.

I know lots of people who have done very well in government jobs. No one here can tell you whether this particular government job is worth leaving your current private sector job for.

I will qualify for 3 pensions by age 42. I could go for more if I wanted.

I will have an inflation adjusted 6 figure income in my 60s from pensions.

Some take as little as 5 years to qualify for.
