Hey everyone, I’ve got my Security+ and CEH certifications, but landing my first IT job has been tough. I’m transitioning from 13 years in oil & gas and looking for a role that helps me break in and accelerates my path to financial independence.
I’ve seen a lot of people doing really well in IT, and I’d love to hear from anyone who can share advice or point me in the right direction.
Also, if you switched to IT from a different field, I’d love to hear your story.
Thanks in advance for any tips or leads!
DennesCybersecurity is not an entry level career. You will need to tailor your past experiences around security, whether technical, physical or otherwise.
You may need to gain some IT experience first like working a help desk or technician role to build on the knowledge you gained from those certs into hands-on IT/cyber experience
NickI’m somewhat in the same boat as you but had my ccna before and used to work at a NOC. Buddy of mine is doing real well in sec in Colorado working for a bank now but has done a few contracts.
Reach out if you want but yeah SOC is where it’s gonna be and per youtube peeps, you’re going in the right direction doing the labs/projects.
Me, I got my CCNA and was able to get into a Managed Services Provider as Tier 1 help desk and they had SOC there too.
But basically from what my buddy was saying he spent about a yr in the SOC and then went somewhere else that I can’t remember and yhen had to go get more certs to get to the next level.
So, idk if you’ve seen this one cat on yt but evidently he’s got a bit of a road map to work with I’ll see if I can grab the vid.
DrewI’m in cyber, feel free to reach out with any questions.
Right now I’d say get practice with various tools and explore areas to automate with scripting and AI.Hiring managers will love it if they know you can scale/improve a process as opposed to just maintaining it
EricWhat’s your goal in cyber? GRC? Identity? Incident response? Threat hunting? Blue/Red team? Given your CEH it’s more pentest.
I’m in cyber ops and my experience has been in clinical application support, infrastructure (hyper converged, Active Directory etc).
Hit me up if want.
