Who struggles with this and how do you handle it? RE: Clutter…..I am not a hoarder by any means, but we all have “stuff” that we as frugal people don’t let go.
I have no problem donating my clothes or small household items to the local thrift store.
I also repurpose things around the house frequently. However, the items that I know are worth $$ are the issue.
I don’t have yard sales. I do try and sell a few things on FB but don’t have great luck with say a $20 household item.
How do you deal with these things as a thrifty person? I need $$, but I also just want to get rid of alot of things.
Ohh, the quandry.
ChristinaSame! I just keep relisting them for sale. I’d rather hang on to them and hopefully sell them than give away.
Two years ago I bought two pair of Nike tennis shoes for my son…$55 a pair. He wore them ONE MONTH and only a few times when he outgrew them.
I was in disbelief! He had just turned 11 and I was fully expecting the shoes to get through that summer at least.
I still have them and trying to sell them. lol I’m not giving them away.
I sell my things on marketplace and eBay.
I’d say keep trying to sell. Eventually someone will appreciate the deal and the value of the item.
BrianI typically just donate anything I don’t use anymore. Sure, I could get some money for it. But it’s a lot of hassle sometimes.
I don’t feel bad about donating something of value that I don’t use.
I know someone in need will use it and that’s good enough for me.
PatriciaHonestly, I just post things like that in the Buy Nothing group. I’d rather it be gone than spend time and energy for $20 or less.
I hit up the groups when I need something so in my mind it averages out.
GenYardsales. They are the best way to get rid of multiple things and are more likely to draw people in than a single item posted.
Honestly, the things you think are worth $20, just aren’t.
Secondhand items are only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
ShelleyResist a couple times. If it doesn’t move, your price is too high.
Relist at a lower price.
PatriciaI just have to donate. I do need the money but to sell is very difficult for me (not for most but is for me,).
I’m going through a big declutter right now.
It’s taking me so long but it’s going to get done
AnnetteFrom my perspective one need weigh the hassle of selling with the ease of donation. I have done both, one year I sold dang near everything I owned with Craigslist.
I have also offered heaps of things free or taken them to be donated.
Only you can decide which way you want to go.
BethanyI consider being minimalist the best way of being frugal. I donate to a local place and I offer up things on our local buy nothing site so other people get use out of them when I am able to.
Otherwise, I just throw things away.
I don’t need to keep clutter that takes up space/time/energy.
I love our buy nothing group for this because almost always I can find someone who will want what I am giving out.
JanNot a hoarder but I am a clutterer. Better today than 10 years ago. I never have a problem getting rid of stuff and I was that person that bought 5 of everything when I was younger.
Working on that and doing better. It’s a process and 1 day at a time.
I give lots of stuff away because I hate the selling thing and all the no shows.
JustineMy advice, try and sell your items. If they don’t sell in a certain number of days, then reduce price. After that if they don’t sell them I would charity shop them.
I find second hand items are rarely worth anything.
I personally would value the time as its worth more than money. Hope this helps x
JulieWhat about neighborhood yard sales or flea markets? We had a flea market and everyone would sell there.
They closed it up to build more apartments because we only have 73 million of them.
But now people sell in parking lots of large businesses. Walmart. Bowling ally. Etc.
Just a thought to look into.
KimberlyIf you put an item on FB Market. If it doesn’t sell in a week. You have to change the ad for your item so it goes back up to the top again.
Otherwise, it keeps going down with more listings put in.
And you have to reduce price after two weeks. It’s just not selling.
Also, you can look for items on FB market for prices to price your item comparable so it doesn’t sit so long.
Do you want money for it or to store it for a long time because you feel it’s worth more. The money is already spent.
It costs more to hold on to and store it.
Remember an item your selling means more to you. This person buying doesn’t care why you have it or why your selling it.
If all else fails put it in a no buy group. Give to neighbors and family and friends who may really need that item.
Best of luck in your declutter going forward.
NeshaI’d rather give stuff away than sell it. None of my stuff is really worth much money, because used stuff is crazy cheap and I mostly buy used in the first place.
But philosophically, I’d rather pass stuff on to someone who wants it, knowing that when I want something someone else will share.
