I am 34 years old. I currently work for the state full time (93k salary) and also have a part time job (38/hr).

I have rental properties where I can safely begin to use $3200/month on my own expenses. I have about 30k in 401k and 457, and about 60k in a high yield savings.

I would like to quit my full time job. I want to be present for my daughter and for my husband.

Most of the time I’m working and I feel like I’m missing out on the joys of life. I also struggle with accruing time off because I like to travel. I’d love to have the freedom to do what I want in any given day.

The thing holding me back is the insurance plan. Ideally it would benefit me in the future to be vested with the state so that I can have access to anthem insurance at 62.

I am also concerned that I wouldn’t be able to travel as much anyways with a pay cut by working part time only.

Am I thinking about this the wrong way? I can’t really talk to my family or friends about this.

most of my money went into buying real estate rentals to create passive income. That’s why my traditional retirement accounts are low.

I have about 3200/mo in passive income after debt servicing and maintenance expenses.

A little bit of reality coming in.. you have 90k to your name. Which means you spend most of your current income. 90k is 1 year of your salary and then you’re broke again.

We’d all like to not work, so we can just hang out with the kids, but alas, we must feed our kids, and provide shelter for our kids, and pay to educate our kids.

Now here’s what you could do. Cut your expenses significantly, so you can go part time.

One of you significantly increase your income so that the other may be more present, stop traveling so much so you can save for a better future.

You’re in the stage of life where you must decide trade-offs.

If you follow fire, you will get to your dreams sooner rather than later, but even with fire, it takes time, sacrifice of wants, and good incomes.

Sabbatical, maybe but retire, likely no. Is your husband working? That freedom is expensive.

Do you like your part time job because it is part time or because of the line of work?

If the latter, can that become full time?

If you don’t like your job, it will take the life out of you and you may not last 30 years to usethe health benefits.

It might depend on what you need to meet your month to month needs and wants. But it also looks like you might not be saving enough for retirement, and these early years are going to help you the most.

I think a lot of recommendations are to have 2x your annual salary saved by 30s, so may want to get more aggressive with that and boost your salary a bit before cutting back the full time job.

What are the reasons you’re not thinking about cutting your part time job to have more free time?

You don’t have enough money to quit your FT job.
And you’re not on track for retirement and you can’t afford to travel if you want to be able to live when you’re 60.

Keep working. Max out retirement accounts.
              Then retire early.

No better feeling in the world than to fully commit to passive income and FIRE your boss!!

                Best move we ever made!
