I lost my FAANG job at the end of January. Thankfully I was able to secure a new one and will start next week.

This new one is not ideal as it pays less than I’d normally make in tech and I have to go in the office 3x a week (spouse and I share a car because he travels internationally a lot for his job and I have been working remotely for 15 years), but I am grateful for this job offer because the job market is really tough right now.

It’s a good job but I know my worth in the market given my skills and experience (20+ years with leadership experience). Having said that, I am actively still applying for jobs to hopefully land something better where I can settle permanently (hopefully).

For context, I am not a job hopper, I have only worked for two companies – 21 and 3 years.

Question: I have yet to update my LinkedIn profile showing that previous job ended.

Once I start my new job I am not sure if should update it with my new job given that I am actively still applying for more suitable roles with better compensation.

I dont kniw if i will get interview calls, but in case I do, does it look strange if I start a new job while interviewing for another one?

How do you answer those questions?

You don’t have to update your linkedin when you start a new job. I’ve seen people switch jobs and never update their linkedin.

Executive Recruiter here. I would suggest waiting to add your new job while you are still applying.

But definitely disclose the fact that you are in a new role when applying and when talking to new companies.

Give it a month or so and then add it if nothing looks likely to make you an offer.

You can actually update your LinkedIn profile settings so that it doesn’t “post” updates, like it won’t send a status update to your network of the change you made.

Although, it’s up to you if you actually want to make these changes to your profile.

Does it sound strange of starting a new job and interviewing at the same time? In the olden days, yes.

Now, I think hiring companies would understand due to the nature of the market.

You’ll need to come up with a statement along the lines of wanting to do work that is closely aligned to your areas of expertise.

I had to look up FAANG. There is no rule stating you need to keep LinkedIn up to date.

No. Just say you haven’t gotten around to it. Plenty of folks do not update their LinkedIn profiles, even for years.

Maybe even settle into your new job before updating to ensure that new job even deserves to be on your profile.

I would not list your new job. When I see someone who is applying for a role on my team and they have only been in their current role for a short time (one year or less), I generally write them off as unreliable.
