I’m 40 and looking to take our next few years of vacations in places that we can explore to see where we want to live when our child graduates in 9 years.

What are the most inexpensive but beautiful places in the world for a couple turning 50 to retire to?

I’d like to make a list so I can start planning our vacations there now so we can see what we like and don’t like.

We can usually get away with 4 months of travel per year being creative with the attendance policy of the elementary school our child attends.

Lake Como Italy is gorgeous and a hot spot for retirement.
Portugal has easier immigration requirements and good cost of living.

Porto area – I have not been but it’s on my visit list.

We are also looking at Ireland due to family connections.

It’s a small, beautiful country in close proximity to the places we want to travel.

Having just visited, I can see why Portugal is popular with retirees

The Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois is a great place to live.

It’s a checkerboard mix of forest, farm land, small towns and even a few swamps that runs from the Ohio river to the Mississippi river, with a low cost of living and the added bonus that Illinois does not tax retirement income.

Highly recommend the ABCs–still Dutch for healthcare/government, about what an MCOL city would cost, and tropical year-round.

I love the New England area; Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

frequently make expat retirement lists. One of my favorite YouTube channels about moving abroad in retirement is Traveling with Kristen.
