Hello everyone, I’m torn between two decisions
Taking a job with an hour-hour 16 commute each way
OrTaking a job with a 45 min commute+ and a 20-40k/year pay loss 3 days a week with a weekend day commitment. And working another job
I would like to purchase more properties and save for retirement but I also value my time and considering the wear and tear on my car
CatherineUntil you have legit offers, I wouldn’t be weighing any options. This is like saying I might get a 10k bonus or 25k depending how we perform this year.
Wait and see.
It could be neither.
JoshuaWhat’s an hour hour 16 commute?
Also, I feel like 20 to 40k is useless info without context. Are we talking about a salary of 30 to 50k or are we talking 1.02 and 1.04 million?
I assume somewhere in between
DaveIf possible, find something with even less than a 45-minute commute.
A two-hour roundtrip commute five days a week adds an extra 10 hours per week on top of your (presumably) 40 — when you calculate your hourly rate, that’s essentially a 20% pay cut compared to working from home with no commute.
If telework isn’t possible, then minimizing the commute is still greatly beneficial — 20 minutes each way would be much less impactful on your health/stress and finances.
