For anyone who does their own taxes, I just wanted to give a thumbs up to FreeTaxUSA. I own a rental property and have always used the paid version of Turbotax to do my taxes.

I tried FreeTaxUSA for the first time this year and it was extremely easy to use even for calculating depreciation, which is the trickiest part for me.

I personally found the explanations and answers to common questions to be written very clearly. I would even say it was easier to use than Turbotax.

Some people will even qualify for free state tax filing.

Second year using FreeTaxUSA. It’s super easy. Won’t ever go back to TurboTax.

We also use FTUSA, I think for the second year. I struggled with other companies charging for the premium service and the only thing we used above the free tier was form 8880 for the Saver’s Credit.

FT USA includes the Saver’s Credit for free. I do pay $15 for the state filing fee.

Were you able to import from your old TurboTax file?

I’ve been hesitant to use it because of the rental depreciation.

I’ve already paid an accountant for this year, but maybe I’ll do it on my own with FTUSA and see if we get the same numbers.

I’ve been using it a few years and it’s been great. Fairly simple taxes– W2, some interest income, backdoor Roth and HSA contributions.

Only one issue this year– they introduced uploading your W2 through a PDF, and my medicare income was wrong in the software, so I had to fix that manually.

Make sure to check the W2 if you upload it!

Just used them this year. Second time doing my taxes. Big gap in-between those years. I was a bit nervous but it was easy enough to use.

State refund already hit a week after.

                  Still waiting on federal, though.

Does it allow for input of the Backdoor roth and the mega backdoor roth?

I used it for the first time this year too. In the past I have always used credit karma which became cash app taxes.

I always make sure to decline their info sharing option but always felt kind of uncomfortable with it.

Free tax USA calculated the same amount due as cash app this year and I thought it was easier to work with.

I will switch to them in the future.

I’ve used it to do my daughter’s taxes which are simpler than mine.

Might try it for my own next year.

Thank you for the recommendations! CPA’s are expensive and this would save a lot of money

We’ve used it a few years now and love it. We are W2 but have side businesses also, plus stock sales and 529 distributions.

                            It’s very easy IMO.

I’ve never heard of it and will have to research that. I just paid $269 for TurboTax.

                                  Our taxes aren’t very complicated.

I’m always worried that transferring from TurboTax to another site will be a lot more work since turbo tax saves a lot of the info from year to year.

                                    Was that the case?

On my second year. Last year I ran it side by side with TurboTax and there was maybe a 10-dollar difference so I was in.

I can’t believe how well it works given the price.

I used it for the first time this year and its was super easy. Does anyone know if there’s a way to ONLY file federal on it though?

I don’t want to use it file state since it’s free to file state in Colorado but I couldn’t see a way to bypass state and have it submit federal.

Thank you for the tip, I paid $700 this year to my accountant!

I own two rentals so worried about making the switch.

Yes. I have used freetaxusa for over a decade and love it. I have more complex taxes and can still do it myself.

I do buy the audit assist just in case.
