For those who’ve added a teen driver to their car insurance policy, how much did your rates increase? I’m curious to hear from others about how much premiums typically rise when including a teenager on the plan.

Did you notice any particular trends based on the driver’s age, gender, or driving experience?

Additionally, were there any discounts, such as good student or driver’s education credits, that helped offset the cost?

Sharing your experiences could be helpful for families preparing to add a new driver to their policy.

My son just got his license, has his own vehicle. Comprehension coverage, I was shocked it only went up about $30 per month.

I have progressive and have every single discount possible though & have been with them for almost 20 years.

200 per month for a 16 year old girl driving her own car, a 2006 civic. Thats with progressive.

I called my broker today to look for other options. It’s brutal.

Really best to get young new drivers their own “ first car” and their own liability policy

This way it won’t affect your policy

Doubled, but eventually we found a better deal with Progressive.

Over $300/mo, female, 17. Purchased a 2015 Chevrolet Mirage stick shift used for $3500.

San Antonio, Tx She just hit her 1 year anniversary driving so I need to call and see if they’ll lower it.

That was with good grade discounts and everything

Our doubled without even adding a car. Funny thing was it went way down when we added an old Hyundai with only liability and made her the primary for that car.

May want to consider adding a car….

Ours wasn’t terrible at first. Maybe $100/month. What sucks was fast forward 7 years and our insurer wouldn’t renew our auto policy because of our oldest child’s horrible driving record.

We planned to keep our kids on our policy until they were 25 or finished college.

We had to remove them earlier so we could get coverage for ourselves at reasonable rates.

Wow, this makes me feel a little better. My daughter got her license a couple days ago and our policy went up $700 per 6 months.

Most of that was for coverage on 2 cars that she’ll never drive.

Insurance company won’t allow me to select specific cars for coverage if she is on my policy.

                        It went up substantially.
I think when they are 15 , they are automatically covered on your cars. Once they become licensed it goes UP!

I think taking Driver’s education and proof of straight A student can lower it.

I try any angle that I can to save money
. Boy drivers are more expensive too.
I did find State Farm to be the cheapest option.

More than double (and yes we shopped around) eta: we did not add another car either.

State Farm, male, 16. It did go down a smidge at 17 but not much.

Varies by state, but in Texas, it typically goes up by around 125%. That’s what our research showed a few years ago before we added our first teen driver, and we saw it increase almost exactly that.

You have permission to cry now (and even more after adding a second teen).

Ours went up $250/month, teen boy, no additional car was added since he drives our current vehicles.

I pay yearly. Ours went up close to $3k when my daughter got her car at 16. Type of car plays a big part too

$200 per month for 17 year old son with a good grade AND a drivers school discount who drives a 2017 Ford Escape.

Our other cars are a 2017 Ford F150 and a 2016 Honda Pilot. Arizona. We took the college daughter off (except when she is home) as she doesn’t have a car and is 1600 miles away.

Our son’s twin sister hasn’t gotten around to taking her test yet and just lets her brother and her friends chauffeur her around.

But, I think she’s getting tired of that and finally wants to get her license. One of my kidneys might soon be for sale.

Insane amount! Just added my second teenager, $2K for 6 months. The rate for my oldest teen dropped once he turned 18.

Due to the umbrella I need to maintain a higher coverage.

Currently I’m paying about $7K a year for car insurance for the 3 of us for 3 cars.

Doubled without adding a car, just my son. And that’s with a driver’s ed and good student discount.

                                        About $185/month more

$200/mo but we also added umbrella insurance. That’s with the good student discount, too.

She has paid her share and her gas from the get-go though.

I give her a small amount of money for gas so that she can always get to and from school, but that’s it.

She pays for everything else and we split the big maintenance costs that would be prohibitively expensive for her.

Ours $100/month. We are with USAA. They have an insurance estimate on their app. We looked at all sorts of cars, we picked a 2012 Volvo XC60, because it was the cheapest.

She has full coverage, roadside, and even rental included.

                                            When we looked:
                                            Old Ford escapes decent
                                            Newer style twice as much

                                            Anything Dodge was 2.5 higher
CRV and Rav 4 were about 15-20% higher
Sedans cost about 20-25% to 2x higher

So much that we refused to do it and signed a document stating he would not be driving our vehicles.

We will give him a car in his name when he can afford to pay the insurance.

Ours went up 2500 for the year adding our daughter and a 2006 Lexus. I’ve been preparing for it to go up that amount again when we have to add our son without an additional car.

Doubled when adding a car and driver with Erie. Many other companies quoted same thing. Even progressive through my current ins broker.

Did my own quote with progressive online.

Price only went up about $1000 a year for a third driver and a third vehicle. Check them out.

Progressive online cheaper than progressive through an agent.
