What’s the viability of freezing whole milk? My significant other uses it sporadically, either not touching it for weeks or using it multiple times per day.
We were using ultra pasteurized, which, while more pricey by unit was cheaper than wasting most of it, however our local stores have stopped stocking it.
We have tried alternatives such as powdered milk, however they dislike the taste of anything other than whole milk.
I’m not thrilled at the prospect of devoting that much freezer space , but it seems like the least wasteful solution at the moment.
MaryI like Nido brand powdered milk even though it’s a Nestlé product.
Keeps well.
ElaineLook up Parmalat. I think that’s how it’s spelled. Shelf stable. I had some on a camping trip, tasted like regular milk.
I’ve heard that refrigerated milk seprates when frozen.
Also have to plan ahead to thaw it.
VanessaStarted buying shelf stable milk and keep some back in my pantry. It’s 1.25 at Dollar tree. Just open one when I need it and refrigerate and hope I use it all lol.
We drink almond milk but still like regular milk for mashed potatoes and such.
Also, with half gallons of milk costing over 2 bucks, I feel like im saving money for sure
AntoniaDollar Tree sells shelf stable milk. Though I did once buy some that was spoiled.
DenniseI sometimes freeze milk. I don’t do it often, mostly if leaving on vacation and don’t want to waste it. I freeze it in emptied water bottles, seemed like a good size and easy to store and use.
Seems fine to me. I use skim milk, not sure if the extra cream in whole milk makes a difference.
I do also freeze extra whipping cream in ice cube trays.
The consistency of that changes enough that I’m not sure it would actually whip up the same but still seems the same in soups, coffee etc.
TerryI buy a gallon of 2% and pour half in a plastic 2 qt milk jug and freeze that. We drink about 2 q in 2 weeks, mainly for coffee and cereal.
Then I pull out the half gallon and use that for another 2 weeks.
I just hate to waste it.
So, about a gallon a month unless my granddaughter is over, then a lot faster!
PattyWhen using a glass jar for freezing, leave enough head room for expansion so the jar doesn’t break.
Using recycled glass jars is great!
DelBeen freezing milk my whole life. Just shake it good after thawing as the fat separates a little.
PeterI use the shelf-stable milk in the single servings. Makes it convenient and reduces waste considering that I only use milk occasionally in my cooking.
ConnieI buy whole milk in cardboard cartons instead of plastic. The date is always a month out..
it keeps much fresher for longer in cartons rather than plastic jugs.
JoyWe freeze our whole milk because we don’t drink it fast enough. I buy a gallon, pour about a quart into a glass bottle then squeeze a little air out of the milk jug, screw the lid on and drop into deep freeze.
It expands when frozen. Once we finish the quart I thaw the milk and pour another quart into a glass bottle and I make yogurt from the half gallon left.
We usually get 2 pints of strained Greek yogurt from the 1/2 gallon of milk. When our quart of milk is almost gone, I buy another gallon of milk and repeat the whole process.
We don’t notice a taste difference
SusanI can never drink even a half gallon before it sours. So, I started buying the little pint bottles, wash in top rack and save.
Now I have enough to bring home a larger container, divide it among the smaller bottles and freeze.
Thaw in the fridge and it’s just like fresh.
I try to buy one new pint bottle a month so I can rotate the oldest one out into the garbage.
NancyI shop monthly. I buy 9-10 gallons of whole milk to freeze. Zero issues. I prefer to defrost in refrigerator.
Hubby prefers quick; microwave or sink of hot water. Both are fine.
Only issue is if someone drinks a glass before fully defrosted, what’s left isn’t quite whole milk.
The cream will defrost first.
KirstenI used to freeze milk all the time. It needs a good shake after defrosting but that’s it
TraceyI used to freeze dairy milk all the time
I now use plant based but it worked just fine nPatI freeze whole milk all the time. I open the container and pour off about a cup to allow room for expansion. Freeze it.
When I need it, I thaw it and shake it up real good.
MelissaI loved when you used to be able to buy a quart. I can’t even get a single serve unless it’s chocolate or strawberry.
ZoeI usually drink 1% or 1/2% but since I have started freezing milk I don’t like the taste any lower than 2%.
Our store puts half gallons on sale ever two to three weeks which works good for us.
KristiYou can use an immersion blender after it thaws. Also, ziplocs are prone to leaking so if you use them, thaw them in a bowl.
RobanBreak it down into cottage cheese containers( pint size=2 cups) and they are stackable, defrost quickly and this amount can easily be used in cooking if not timely used…
shake defrosted…it stays good at least a week if kept cold and frozen directly after original co trainer is opened!
(my experience that’s the key to successful frozen milk use!
NicoleWhen milk freezes the fat separates. I found the milk always tasted funny after frozen, until we switched to Skim.
Even if ya shake it, it doesn’t taste right.
SuzanneFreeze milk in ice cube trays
When frozen, place milk cubes on a ziploc & use as neededColetteHas anyone made ice cubes out of whole milk? I wonder if the fat would separate in the time it takes to freeze.
Once frozen the milk could be stored in a freezer bag or a jar.
