Has anyone altered bras? I have lost 45 lbs this year and I am hoping to lose more. My bras do not fit anymore. Its the cup as well as the straps. Bras are so expensive.
Even if I keep buying 1 correctly sized bra (especially in summer where sweat shirts do not hide things), I would love to figure out how to alter my current ones.
In all honesty, they are pretty old and not really in good enough shape to donate.
Thank you for all your advice. I ‘was’ a 38 DD. I read an article a long time ago that the breasts of American women sag more than French women – because its a cultural thig for Americans to strap everything up and French women can go braless.
I am not comfortable going braless, but I no longer make sure everything is snug. But now I fall out the top everytime I bend over. This is what I need to stop.
I haven’t shopped at WalMart for a bra since I was a teen. I think I’ll go see if they still have the playtex cheapies they had back then.
I have never really been able to find sports bras that fit right – but I will look.
KimberlyI was a 38ddd. I would find good quality ones during Black Friday. Kohl’s had them for the best prices. About $15 for name brand ones.
Do “seeking “on buy nothing group.
Go thrifting
MicheleYes, you can cut and move back strap easily but cups can be a challenge. Try and if they get wrecked buy afew cheap ones for now.
Pintrest may have an instruction video?
LindaIf they aren’t good enough to donate then they aren’t good enough to wear
MarilynIf they’re not good enough to donate they’re probably not good enough to attempt to alter.
A bra really needs to fit right.
JaneAgreed that sports bras might be the right solution for now, also maybe check out if there are bralettes in your size?
Or something like that which is not so rigid with sizing like a traditional bra.
I’ve also known some people who did not like bras in general and wore a good form-fitting tank top (or I guess you could get a camisole top) and a looser shirt above it for summer
KayPlease go to a store that does bra fitting for your correct size, whether you purchase one from them or not.
Once you have your size, you can always buy/look for sales of quality bras.
Bras can’t be returned so you might find bra’s online at places like Poshmark,eBay that were previously sold or maybe discontinued.
I once found a style that I liked, bought one full price, saved the style # and found several brand new ones online for very cheap
KellieIf you are finished losing I recommend getting two — one in black and one in your skin tone and hand wash them once a week or so.
Two decent bras should last several years and will be worth the small “investment”.
AlexanderWhen you have lost a large amount of weight, treating yourself to a new bra and undies is a reward, even if you buy cheaper ones.
MeganIt would cost more to alter than buy new. You’d be looking at probably $40-50 to alter
ChanellThis project is not worth it.
There are a lot of pins on Pinterest for making your own though. If you’re handy enough with a needle to alter you should be able to make something custom to fit without too much trouble.
Give it a try!
AnnyIf you have a Costco membership in often get a two pack for 20$ Canadian and they can be anything from underwire, bralette or seamless bras.
I’m always happy with the price.
SusanI would recommend posture bras. They fit snugly and have wide straps. I bought some.
So comfortable I don’t realize I’m wearing them most of the time, and they are sturdy.
Won’t need to replace them for years.
TinaJust buy new ones throw your old ones out you will be glad you did unless you had custom made bras it simply is not worth it. Get properly fitted 8 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong bra size.
Go to a good department store in your area like Macy’s, Nordstroms, Nieman Marcus, even if you have no intention of buying your bras there.
Waacool, and Glamorize Bras both make excellent bras especially if you are a C cup or above and have been making them for years.
Worth the investment. I have found some on sale even on Amazon and snatched em up when they go on a good price in my size. I am a 38D
JillWhile you’re losing weight, buy some inexpensive bras. Once you get down to your goal, then buy better bras.
JanelleUntil you are at your designated weight, I would pick up some nice t-shirt bras at Walmart (I found some great ones for $5) or name brand bras at Ross Dress for Less, TJ Maxx or any other discount store ($8-15).
ElaineI but my planted bras from Kohls at Christmas…get them for $12 each. Sign up for notifications from Brad’s deals.
Macy and Penny’s are often on Brad’s deals for Playtex around $15.99
NancyIt’s very difficult to alter bras because the cup size is related to the band. In other words, your cup size and your band size are independent from the other.
If you are 38 band and a C cup, and lose weight so your band size moves to a 36 but your breast measurement has not decreased, then you are no longer a C cup but you are now firmly in the D cup range, even though there is no change to your breast size/measurement.
You can, for a while, just double over a section of the bras by the hooks or eyes and stitch it making the band smaller a bit if your cup size is the same.
If your breast size is smaller, you could use breast enhancers to keep your bra ‘fitting’ longer, but they usually aren’t cheap either.
Their advantage is that you can move them to whatever bras you still have (one will work in many bras).
Remember when you go to buy a new bra, you will need to retake all your measurements or have someone help you (Victoria’s Secret or Macy’s often have people trained to assist).
I hope this helps.
AnnBras that fit well can help you avoid back pain, even with losing weight. It is best to get a quality bra on sale than an inexpensive one.
Save your money on clothes that don’t impact your comfort.
If you’ve ever spent a day with an uncomfortable bra you know what I mean!
