My dil parents had her take over her student loan payments, however, there was a misunderstanding on the time this was to be done and now she realized she has 4 missed payments from chase and i believe they have reported to the credit bureaus..
any suggestions on things she can do to help with this.. also does it take 7 years for this to fall off?
thank you
FrankJust get caught up. And stop fixating on credit scores.
You can’t live off them and they will fix themselves if you get the rest of your financial house in order.
MeganI would call them. I had a friend, in the past, that made that mistake. They reaged them and they went current.
It’s worth a shot
TrishI’d call Chase. Explain the situation and offer to pay up current. Also, where are the statements being sent? To parents?
If so, she should also get that updated when she calls.
AmyWhat is meant by “her student loan payments”? Are these loans that the parents took out and they have made an agreement that DIL is now responsible to pay them?
Or are they student loans that DIL took out that the parent had been paying?
Or some combination of the two? This is important because it will impact who can speak to Chase on the accounts, and whose credit is impacted by the late payments.
If they are PLUS loans to parents, it’s probably the parents’ scores that are being impacted.
Unless the parents have put DIL on the account as an authorized person, she probably can’t even talk to Chase about the loans.
So DIL’s parents will have to be the ones to call Chase and add DIL to the account.
They can also explain the situation and see if there is anything that they can do to get Chase to change the credit reporting.
If they are DIL’s loans that the parents had been paying on, then DIL will need to call Chase and explain the situation. Unless the parents co-signed on the loans, only the DIL’s credit scores are being impacted.
Again, DIL should explain the situation and see if there is anything that she can do to get Chase to change the credit reporting.
In either case, Chase probably won’t be willing to change the credit reporting, so those who have had their credit impacted are probably going to have to live with the impacts for another 6 1/2 years.
