So, I just looked up how to freeze my credit with credit rating companies. They want a lot of information, and of course accounts.
I’m very suspicious these days. Have people done this, and what is your experience with their service?
Easy to freeze and unfreeze? Some other advice?
CharSeveral years ago, my husband and I followed the format and to how to freeze our credit on Trans Union Equifax and Experian accounts it was really a simple thing to do.
I’ve had my Credit files frozen for many years when I know I needed to have my credit checked I would ask which one did they use and so I would just unfreeze that for a short specific time, and then, after that, it automatically go back to being frozen we were listening to Clark Howard.
HelenYes, I froze our names in 2022; last November my husband received an email about his name showing up in somewhere and he had instructions on what to do; super simple.
This week I decided to get an Apple CC in anticipation of purchasing directly from Apple.
I had to do a temporary lift for one of the agencies; as soon as my application was approved, I went back online and canceled the temporary lift.
Super simple.
Just be certain to document your information as related to each reporting agencies.
TeresaI keep a file folder for each credit agency with information and PIN number. We refinanced and unfreezing was easy. I set it to unfreeze for 5 days while my bank needed our credit report.
They couldn’t tell me which agency they use so I had to unfreeze from all 3.
The thing is, you have to unfreeze it to check on your own credit too.
Not an issue for me because I rarely take out loans or apply for a credit card.
Cashiers offer discounts on first purchase for applying for a store credit card, but I decline because it will not approve if credit is frozen.
AnnetteI unfroze and refroze all three credit agencies last week. It can be done, ya just have to find the right spot.
It is free!
HeatherExperian, trans union and Equifax are the three credit bureaus and it should be fairly easy to freeze your credit with them
KirstenIt’s actually easy and you don’t have to give a ton of info. I do remember one of them being harder than the others because they try to sell you on their credit monitoring services.
I had to do a search to find out how to freeze but once I found it it was easy. There other two were much easier.
Just remember not to pay for anything. It’s free to freeze and unfreeze your credit
MollyYou can go directly to Experian, TransUnion and Equifax to freeze your credit.
I did it a few years ago so I don’t remember details, but I don’t remember them asking for any account info, just basics like name, social security, etc.
It will then block anyone from being able to run a credit report on you unless you unfreeze it first.
I also set alerts with my bank to be notified of all transactions above 1 penny, just so I know if anyone got access to my account.
