How to cook and store a giant 29¢/lb turkey efficiently?

      29 cents/lb turkey.
      After Thanksgiving the giant 18+ lb turkeys went on sale for 29 cents per pound . Even with my big chest freezer, I could only find room for 3. They cost roughly $5.25 per turkey.

      It is only me & my husband, but what meat can you buy for $0.29/lb.?

      The biggest challenge is you have to know how to cook a giant turkey, have a big enough roasting pan, also takes 4+ hours. I found Stove Top stuffing for 25 cents a box.

      I really can’t begin to guess how many meals I’ll get out of this.

      My guess is about 20. Plus turkey soup from the carcass. With all the trimmings , less than $1 / meal.
      My vacuum sealer is going to get a workout. The last turkey went into the oven at noon.

      Turkey for dinner tonite.

        I love cooking big turkey s! What I would start with is cutting the breast off of the turkey and making turkey cutlets.

        They freeze amazingly well! I slice them, flour, then egg wash them fry in bread crumbs.

        I would roast the rest and have your regular turkey meal with stuffing and mashed potatoes and gravy, etc..

        I might even freeze a meal or two of this for later on. With the leftover meat I would make some turkey pot pies.

        I would then take the carcass and make turkey rice soup or turkey noodle soup.

          The butcher dept at my grocer will slice large meats for me. It means I have to wait a few minutes but I often ask them to at least split meats in halves or quarters, depending on my plans for the meat.

            Yeah, I buy extra turkeys when they are on sale and then I make them up one by one. I keep the dark meat and I split the white meat between my 2 daughters.

            It’s perfect as we dont eat white meat and they don’t eat dark meat.

                When I find them on sale like this I thaw them one at a time and use a giant Canning Pot I have, boil them till done, debone and then freeze them in my deep freezer, quick easy access and can use for a number of things like turkey sandwiches, turkey noodle soup, etc.

                    Good deal. I got 2 at 49 cents a pound. I love Turkey anytime. Just 2 of us.

                      Yes, space is definitely an issue! However, if you cook and take off the bones, it doesn’t take much space at all.

                      We cooked turkeys to donate to our church ministry, then made bone broth that we’ll have for many soups.

                      My family is not big on turkey generally, and even things I try to make with it are not generally well received (turkey pot pie, any sort of casserole)
