I don’t know the answer about wear and tear, I know sellers used to say that but this last time I bought a mattress the salesperson did not push the boxsprings on me, just asked me if they were still in good shape.

They were and it’s a spare room so I wasn’t interested in spending unnecessary money.

My memory foam mattress we bought with a plank instead of a box spring and it seems fine 10 years later.

My kids beds are platform/slat beds so they don’t have a box spring either.

Maybe it depends on the type of mattress?

A lot of beds don’t even use box springs anymore. I just have a mattress and two foam pads on mine.

No it doesnt. Buy a platform, better than a box spring IMO.

It depends on your bed. Many are designed now where box spring is not needed. None of my beds now need one.

When you go shopping you will see price with and without box spring.

I have one of those foam mattresses with no boxspring. It’s on a platform base. I love it.

Mattress manufacturer here. You’ll get salespeople occasionally tell you it voids the warranty if you don’t buy the box with the matt.

That’s kinda the campfire story version.

If your box springs are good (not broken), you’re totally fine.

It would void the warranty if you’re putting the mattress on a broken box, or something really crazy.

The ones in my spare room are more than 20 years old (I’ve been in this industry for over 25 years).

No. The box spring is just a base. If the base is sound it does not need to be replaced.

I put a cover over my box spring when I bought it 25 years ago.

I just bought my 3rd mattress and changed the cover on the box spring for the 3rd time.

It’s perfect.

My son just has a mattress on a frame.

Box springs are not needed unless your frame requires it for proper height.

As long as the box spring (traditional, slats or bunky board style) is in good condition, it doesn’t matter.

Only thing that matters is that the mattress is fully supported, not sagging anywhere.

The only caution I’d use is if you have a solid memory foam mattress that has a soft bottom (the kind that is meant to be flipped over), I would not put that on a slat style support, it needs something solid so the foam doesn’t mold to the shape of the slats.

I always ask to see their “ scratch and dent” box springs and get great deal on top brands! They not gonna show anyway!

Plus these days there are platform beds but I’ve never owned one.

When I sold mattresses they always said if you didn’t buy the set it would void the warranty.

I would check to see if that’s still true.

They usually only were $100 more, the matress is the expensive part.
