Hi frugal friends! I bought peanut butter at Walmart thru their free pick up. When I saw the break in the lid, I figured the seal was still intact so it should be fine.
It lived in the fridge for a week and then I noticed the discoloration beginning to form at the top. I got a refund and they said no need to bring it back.
Now I’m wondering if I should ditch it or use it?
I’m leaning towards throwing it away but thought I’d ask here first
I keep it in the fridge because I use it primarily for dog meds. It is less sticky and easier to handle refrigerated
AmandaAs someone who went through food poisoning a few weeks ago… THROW IT OUT!! Seriously, that’s something I never want to go through again.
If I feel something is even the slightest bit off, out it goes.
VirginiaDump it. Rancid oils release free radicals throughout the body. There are enough toxins in the world.
TinaPut scoops of it on your bird feeders or in the feeders and watch the squirrels go nuts.
LindaThey already gave you your money back, so toss it & don’t take chances when you don’t need to, please.
CarmanI think putting it in the fridge caused it to do that. I don’t refrigerate PB.
If the actual peelie seal is still tightly wrapped, it’s fine
LynMake treats for the birds take a toilet paper roll smear it with peanut butter and roll it in bird seed and hang outside
StephanieI would scrape off the top part and eat the rest. But also, don’t keep peanut butter in the fridge.
That might be causing the problem.
RickI’m tight as bark on a tree and I wouldn’t eat it or give it to any animal. At worst it’s poisoned/adulterated.
At best there’s still something wrong with it. Toss it.
It didn’t cost you anything.
ElaineI personally would not use it. More than likely it was a bad seal. However, being the skeptic I am and slightly paranoid when it comes to seals on food or medicine, and the fact I have to use a knife to remove the seal, I worry about contamination and would not even feed it to the squirrels.
AnnaPeanut Butter is not going to make you sick, there is nothing in it that would make you sick unless you clearly see mold in it which is highly unlikely.
Peanut Butter can go rancid but that alone would not make you sick, it just has a Off taste to it.
I monitored peanuts for a candy company we had roasters in each store.. I also use peanut butter a lot in home baking.
I’ve had peanut butter well past it’s expiration date.
If it’s a natural peanut butter it may seperate oils from the nuts it doesn’t taste all that great but it won’t make you sick enough to go to a hospital.
I’ve actually even made my own peanut butter.
Hal“When in doubt, throw it out.” You got your money back – no reason to risk it.
LisaI would scoop it into another container to save what I can for making other things like dog treats or cookies
NancyNo!
I know of a young man who had bad peanut butter. It killed his dog, and he had organs shut right down. He had many removed and almost died. They were able to discover it was the peanut butter after the dog died. Sad, but glad they were able to find out what it was.
If it looks like that, it’s definitely not worth it.
EmilyI understand not wanting to waist but throw it away! It’s not worth getting sick
MeganI’d get it exchanged. Even if the seal is intact now, you won’t be able to properly seal it when you break that seal
AllisonDon’t use it and don’t give it to pets or wild animals. Happy to see that Wal-Mart refunded it.
They are good about doing that for delivery items too, if there’s a problem.
BrendaI put on pine cones and hang from trees for birds/squirrels… if it’s not good for them, they won’t eat… (but they do.)
