Which is better: split 401k/403b contributions or max one out?

I have an IRA at about $60k that I’d like to roll into a 401k through my company (3% match).

My wife has a 403b at about $70k.

Which option makes more sense – for me to contribute to mine, and her to contribute to hers, OR to have one of us max ours out and the other pay the bills, etc.?

Retirement plans are not jointly held. You can only roll to your own retirement plans, not your spouse’s retirement plans.

Avoid the company 401k. There are limited investment options, and high fees and quarterly admin fees.

Get a private, no fee, financial advisor.
I used Edward Jones until our net worth qualified us for a more… individualized broker and plan.

Nothing wrong with EJ for Main Street investments, but they have some incentives to guide you to funds that give them kickbacks and are safer, (read lower growth) funds.

Contribute the max you can afford to each plan, yearly max if possible.
Realistically, while you plan to be together in retirement, things don’t always work out.

If you are better positioned than her, a judge will even that out.

If she is better off than you, a judge will usually overlook that imbalance because everyone knows the mom get the kids, and the retirement plans.

Keep things level between you, if you can.

I’d contribute more to the one that’s older as you’d be able to access it without penalty sooner.

You only have one option. Whoever’s name the IRA is in is the account you move it too.

You can’t put in a different name
