Another thing you can do to mitigate thermal shock is have a spoon in the jar as you pour the hot liquid into the jar. Have the jars on a cooling rack or thick kitchen towel before filling with hot liquid and let cool enough to be able to hold it with bare hands before putting them in the refrigerator.
