Looking for Advice: Best Way to Sell a Diamond Engagement Ring
Hey everyone, I’m hoping to tap into the collective wisdom of this group! I have a natural (mined) diamond engagement ring (1.2 Ct center stone, 1.43 total carat weight) that has been sitting in a drawer for 32 years.
I’m looking to sell.
I’ve heard about platforms like Worthy and CIRCA, but I’d love to hear your experiences or recommendations.
My priorities are:
• Getting top dollar for the ring.• Dealing with reputable and transparent buyers (no cagey people or shady business).
• Avoiding consignment situations where the ring might sit for a long time without selling (and the store goes out of business).
• Avoiding bad checks or payment issues—I want to ensure a secure, reliable transaction.
Does anyone have advice on the best places or methods to sell?
Tips on how to ensure a safe and profitable transaction would be much appreciated!
Thank you in advance!
SarahYou won’t get the value you think you will out of it. Not even close. Perhaps 20% of what you paid
KarenConsider having it made into a pendant necklace. My friend did that as her old diamond ring was so hard to sell.
Your best best might be to have it appraised and cleaned locally at an independent jewelry shop and then sell it on marketplace and offer to meet the buyer at the jewelry store.
Or, find a local independent jeweler willing to buy the stone and then sell the gold separately.
Just random thoughts.
HeidiMay I suggest For a sense of just how cheap used diamond rings are selling for, I suggest you visit a local pawn/buy gold place. Look for a ring that resembles yours.
See the general price range. The last place I was in had hundreds of rings, all 1 caret and over, selling for about $500.
I was surprised at how low the prices were.
It seems The demand has withered for real diamonds, it’s no longer a popular choice/status symbol for modern brides.
DeborahLab grown diamonds are so inexpensive it has tanked the price of all diamonds. I would reset it into a pendant or a right-hand ring and keep it.
Sell the setting for the gold price to offset the cost of the new piece of jewelry.
BunnyIf there is a local, reputable jeweler in your community, I’d start there.
DianeI’ve never sold a diamond ring, but have sold a very valuable piece of jewelry and I found a reputable dealer.
He actually met me at my bank and we went inside of our bank and he paid me cash in the lobby.
He was even willing to wait while I made sure the cash was not counterfeit. the transaction was pretty easy.
I called my bank in advance to make sure they were OK with it and they said people do it all the time.
I figured if he was not willing to do that for me then I did not want to do business with him anyway.
CherylYou can try Worthy if it is over 1 carat. You will not get what you want for it.
Maybe make it into a diff kind of jewelry.
MeghanYou’ll never get the value of the ring. I tried several avenues all I’d ever get was the gold value… decided to just have a jeweler turn it into a pair of earrings I wear now.
JoanWhy not have the diamonds reset into something you’d wear…like a necklace.
Otherwise, you won’t get much.
JuliettYoure not getting top dollar.
You will get maybe 25% of retail value if its a High quality diamond. -
