Christine
I finally had my haircut after 10 months of not setting foot in a salon. I spent a full year highlighting and toning my hair on my own watching all kinds of youtube videos.
ION products at Sallys are what I use and they work well. I don’t go bonkers with heat on my hair and use Loreal Elvive shampoo and conditioner.
I was using discount stuff from Ross (which is a store I love) but it really wasn’t doing my hair any favors. I was honestly worried that I was going to be shamed at the salon for coloring my own hair but the lady was incredibly nice.
My cut was only $58.
If you think that’s silly, it’s not as I’m used to spending over $200 on a cut and color.
She had a lot of great tips and tricks for me so I have renwed confidence that I know what I’m doing when it comes to color, plus I’m saving 3-4 hours every few months, plus what it would cost for a baby sitter as often times my hubs gets called into work and it puts a wrench in things.
I’m still not talented enough to try to do acrylics on myself, but maybe I’ll get there some day.
If you’re blonde, Britnee Alexus youtubes are incredibly helpful to learn how to highlight or tone your hair yourself.
We just got to the point where with two kids in daycare, we seriously just cannot afford for me to drop over $200 on my hair four times per year.
Happy saving!
DeniseI’ve been coloring my own hair for four years now. I use the ion products from Sally beauty as well have never had a problem.
When I go to the hairdresser for a cut she only charges $18.
I recently decided I needed a change so I did have her put in blonde highlights and a darker color at the base of my hair that only cost $50.
I’m in trouble if she ever decides to retire.
LoriI am now in my 60’s and after only getting haircuts every 6-8 weeks and coloring my own hair for years (and I HATED doing my hair), I bit the bullet and now have my hair colored and highlighted every 5-6 weeks at a salon.
I hate spending the money and I hate spending 3 hours in the salon but I’ve gotten so many compliments on my hair (and I love it as well) so I am just looking at it as my treat in my golden years.
I’m as frugal as possible in all other areas of my life.
KaethieI’ve been considering coloring my own as well and have been reading up on Sally products. I have basic brown hair with grey roots.
The main thing I’ve read is the color swatches are very misleading.
But other than that, I think the products are pretty much the same as what salons use.
MerryI’ve saved a lot of money by growing out the gray. It was difficult at first because I was always fussy about dark roots.
It is now blending nicely, healthy and has more natural curl.
JoAnnI get my hair cut professionally 2x/yr. Covered my gray myself for probably 10 years. About 6 months ago, I just decided I was done coloring.
I was always fighting to find the color & brand I liked best.
I have a lot more gray in the back but I’ve decided I like it, & I’m free of the expense & aggravation of buying boxed haircolor, & of the time to do it!
Bridgette65 and have never been to a beauty salon for hair or nails.
I don’t think my husband appreciates the money I have not spent.
JackieI have often cut my own hair. And I always cut my hubby’s hair; been doing it for 50 years! I really agree with you. I swear some of the haircuts I see walking around, I think to myself – hey I could do that.
I like Britnee Alexus videos too. Just a few days ago, I followed one of her DIY videos and did it on my own hair.
Worked out fine.
DonnaA lot of hairdressers buy their hair coloring at Sally. I’ve learned how to color my own for a fraction of the price.
I use Age Beautiful, gray magic and 20%Age Beautiful developer 1/2 bottle per use.
It comes out great every time and I only color every 2 and half to three months.
Hairdressers like you to think they are performing technical work but if you know how it’s so easy
DonnaCosmetologist here. I no longer work in a salon. Im also a pastor’s wife. I do hair for a bunch of people in my church very low cost.
I love to teach people how to do their own hair, especially parents of little boys who can cut their hair so easily.
I like to tell people that doing hair isn’t rocket science.
Yes, you need to pay attention to what you’re doing but it’s easy to learn, especially these days with YouTube and tik tok.
If y’all ever have questions, please feel free to ask or message me!
DorieI never color my hair. I cut it myself. I make two pigtails and cut them and then I twist my bangs tight and cut that.
Saving sixty dollars a throw.
StephenieI have been using Henna that I order online from the Henna guyz. I like red, but they also have browns and brunettes. Apparently my hair is going to be white, not grey – so the natural henna is getting me a red color I actually like (I’m still only about 25% white hair).
This has been working great for me and it does not dry out my hair like other dyes do, so I’m saving money on the dye and using fewer products to control damage.
My stylist was also very supportive and gave me some tips.
It does take some planning (mix has to sit for 8 hours before application, and then sit for 3 hours on the hair) – but I do use it as an excuse to have my Sat AMs to myself
BethYes! There is so much we can do at home. I color my own hair,do my own nails (Amazon dip kit, $13 for 4 colors and the other stuff you need, good for about 20-30 manicures) and dye my own eyebrows.
The easiest eye brow color I’ve found is actually Just For Men Beard and Mustache color.
5 minutes and my totally grey/blonde, practically invisible eyebrows are a nice warm brown again.
Lasts about 6 weeks and you get multiple uses out of a $10 kit.
StephanieGood for you!
Hair care is super expensive.* not that they overcharge, but it’s hard to fit that into the budget since it’s strictly aesthetic
TinaION is a good product I use their heat protection product it’s amazing. It was recommended to me by my SIL who is a Barber.
I use CIBU for shampoo, conditioner, and leave in. I was using Nioxon before since I was having hair loss due to medication and and this has made my hair much thicker and kept my color appointments further apart.
MindyI like John Freida and order it online since they carry my product online. When I was working I got my hair trimmed every six weeks. Now it’s about every two months.
I seriously do not have the patience to sit and get my hair or nails done.
When I started getting compliments I knew it was the right color and hides the gray.
LolleyI’ve been coloring my own hair for years. My theory on is that I can color my hair, but there is no way I can cut my own hair so I’m justified in paying a professional to do that.
I also cut 2 of my grown daughter’s hair. I have been doing that for years.
And I color one of them for her.
JuleneCosts me $8 to have my hair trimmed. $10 for a cut. I can’t imagine spending $58 never mind $200
MaryI dyed my own hair even fie my children’s weddings. put everything in a cup. peroxide and dye .mix well and cover hair. put a plastic bag on your head t but rub in well with your fingers before.
I bring a lady hone for a hair cut.
only 10e just concentrate mostly on yhe roots when eyeing your hair
VersieI stopped coloring my hair during COVID. The coloring faded and when I was able to get a haircut I just went to the corner chop shop.
Tip included…total bill $22 out the door.
TrishI’ve been cutting and coloring my hair for years! Get a razor from Sally’s to cut, it is more forgiving than scissors and doesn’t leave cut marks.
Also, if hair is short use thinning scissors (lightly) to add texture and volume.
I frost my hair using products from Sally’s and tone with platinum toner.
I’ve saved thousands of dollars over the years and people compliment my hair all the time.
It’s only hair and if you mess up it will grow out/back.
JanetI go to Kenneth Schuler Beauty School and get a cut and color for around 60 dollars.
They do nails, skincare and other services as well at a fraction of the cost of a regular salon.
