Hi all! I recently had a major surgery and was malnourished during the hospital stay. My dietitian said to do a bland diet. Also when I smell food I get nauseous so I have to take a zofran.

I have no desire to eat all! It’s crazy! I’ve never experienced this before. But I’m asking for recipes or things to eat on a bland diet that frugal .

I’m on a limited budget and I’m trying to figure things out when I’m discharged to tommorow.

      Thank you!

What sounds good ? Start by eating whatever sounds good. Keep getting enough protein in mind so you don’t get muscle wasting

When smells bothered me I noticed cold foods often had less smell than hot foods. I ate a lot of fruit like canned pears, grapes, lettuce, and apples. Cold cut style sandwiches were low odor also.

My son was nauseous for a year and 1/2 from an illness, he drank a Boost drink everyday.

I personally don’t care for the taste (people say chocolate is the best) but there are other meal supplement shakes/mixes that might help you.

They aren’t cheap if you consider them a drink but not bad if you consider them a meal.

My husband is a GI dr, many people are nauseous from anesthesia, and pain killers can make you nauseous.

Hopefully as you come off some meds you will be able to eat more.

Rice with olive oil and a little salt helps when I can’t tolerate things. Sometimes I eat that for the day til my stomach soothes.

Then maybe the brat diet. Bananas, rice, apples, toast.

Or eat ramen noodles or whatever your body will take and work up.

Omg! Homemade bread all the way. Easy to make, so delicious.

Google recipes- all you need is milk/water, flour, yeast, salt and some oil/butter.

I’ve had the flu, and nothing sounds very good but bland, carbby things – toast and rice and crackers.

                    Canned peaches. Baked chicken.

There is a ” new adult pedialyte” called liquid IV that you could sip on all day and it gives the same benefits as an IV…and it was actually tasty!

I just went through the exact same thing after having major surgery last month.

While in the hospital, the doctor prescribed a liquid diet only.

I had broths, jello and tea. I graduated to broth with noodles and soft carrots. Eggs and toast.

I have been eating lots of chicken and rice with carrots and herbs. Eggs still work, as does oatmeal, yogurt, applesauce, bananas, sweet potatoes and green beans.

This has not been expensive to me. But, I don’t know your budget.

Son, Dad, hubby all had issues…broths, rice, bananas, toast, tea, avocado, chilled pasta, light sauce or butter on it, eggs, protein drinks, water definitely…

your taste buds may go through a change…add foods gradually.

Also pain meds will cause constipation and you do need to eat and get your fruits and veggies in. Also, you could do protein shakes.

Pick up a powder and milk and frozen fruits and blend away.

There are days I make chicken salad w boiled chicken add mayo and celery and just a little bit of whatever seasoning you like and you could eat it on bread or crackers or just w a fork.

Bone ɓroth is tasty and has tons of vitamins. I has esophageal surgery in October and could not eat solid food for several weeks.

I ended up back.in the hospital with dehydration and nearly died. Don’t ignore this. Contact you physician and see if they can help.

Divide meals and snacks into small meals. Eat what you can and if it is only a bite or two, that’s ok.

                              Prayers for your recovery.

Did your dietician recommend Ensure? That’s what I had to take when I was malnourished. I supplemented meals with one or two a day. I liked the chocolate.

I’m not sure if it was frugal or not.

I would look for deals at the grocery on white bread, white rice, and pasta.

You can have peanut butter, canned fruits, and potatoes I don’t eat meat so I would eat a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches and peanut butter.

You can probably also have eggs, applesauce, cottage cheese. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon!

Lentils and rice. Lentils have a lot of nutrition and can be cooked with the rice. (just let it cook an extra 3 or 4 minutes) It’s very bland.

You can add salt, pepper, butter or bullion and veggies if you want.

Cottage cheese with fruit might be good too.

One of my go toos is miso soup. Just white miso paste and stock. Add some rice and swirl in some egg to make it a bit more filling.

It’s simple (not proper miso) but it gets some of the good bugs back in your guts.

I’m also partial to a plain baked spud with just butter, or yogurt (sometimes with a clove of garlic mixed in).

Egg in a cup is good too. Just mash a couple of boiled eggs up in a cup with butter and add salt and pepper if youre feeling fancy.

A tiny bit of miso paste mixed in is good yoo (again, bugs are good).
                                    Milk kefir.

It’s refreshing, more good bugs and very filling. And if you dont like it plain add milkshake powder to taste.

Can you do a protein shake? Walmart has an equate brand that have about 190 calories and 30 grams of protein. A 12 pack is a little over $20.

The chocolate tastes a lot like chocolate milk.

Rice and beans. They are pretty high calorie / will help you gain weight and not that expensive if you buy them in bulk / soak them yourself.

A bland diet back in the day (because I’m seeing suggestions here that on an empty stomach is going to cause gastrointestinal pain) Here are some bland ideas that work , soft boiled eggs , chicken broth ,plain crackers, vanilla pudding, jello, cream of wheat or baby cereal better yet ,yogurt, jarred baby food if you can’t handle anything else (after you master this work in some soft foods like chicken breast, pastina, mashed potatoes (not sweet potatoes they cause gastrointestinal pain) soft veggies, fresh pears, mangos .

I think you get the progression idea. Hope you bounce back safely.

Add unflavored powdered protein to an anything you can, such as hot or cold cereals, smoothies, coffee, pudding, pancakes, gravies, almost anything that you can mix it in.

Ask your doctor for medication that will enhance your appetite.

That definitely helped me after I had colorectal surgery and I was malnourished. Prayers for a quick recovery.
