Every situation is different, so I can only speak in generalities. Insurance companies rate drivers based on their age, as well as their years of experience (which is measured as the number of years they have had their license).

Drivers are also rated based on the vehicle they are driving, accident history, driving history, credit history, location, and so on.

You have at least two big strikes against you at this point. First, your BF has no years of experience as a driver.

Second, driving a large vehicle is considered to be a higher risk.

The damage one can do in a large truck is far more significant than the damage one can do in a Honda Civic.

My best advice is for you to not buy the truck at this point And instead get another vehicle similar to your Honda Civic.

However, if you must get the truck, then make sure that you are listed as the primary driver on the truck and your boyfriend is the primary driver on the Honda Civic.

      This may help rates somewhat.
I am sure that your agent can help you with all of this, and really should be able to get you a quote based on your boyfriend having his full drivers license.

If not, you may want to shop around with a different agent because this information is most definitely accessible to the agents.

It won’t be a 100% accurate rate until it goes through underwriting, but it should be very, very close; close enough to help you make a decision.

My son is 22 and pays around $300/mo for $250k/$500k plus a $1M umbrella. He got his license at 16 and has never had a ticket or accident.

His truck is a 2024 Chevrolet K1500 Trail Boss.

I’m sure that location may make a difference. He also gets a discount for having a Costco membership.

When he was still in college, he got a discount for maintaining a certain gpa, as well.

I used to work in auto insurance, and other’s rates give no indication of what yours will be, but it’s wholely unhelpful that your agent won’t help.

They should be able to quote a driver with X dob newly licensed. You might try quoting other companies just to get an idea.

I honestly remember rates from $20 per month increase to $1000 month increase.

It’s crazy in some areas and also depends on if they are adding a vehicle or just driving the existing vehicle.
