I bought an 18 quart electric Aroma roaster on the clearance aisle of Walmart recently. I’ve never cooked with a roaster before, but had seen Ruth Anne Homesteading with the Zimmerman’s on YouTube use one.
I thought it might come in handy & for $15 bucks I couldn’t beat the price! (Similar ones on Amazon run $70-80.
I’ve been experimenting with cooking and baking in it & can gladly say that I am so happy I bought this thing!
Firstly, it’s like a small portable oven which means I can set it up outside or in the cool basement of my home to cook instead of using my traditional oven and heating up the entire house.
I live in a 1970s raised ranch that is poorly insulated, the top floor is always too hot in the summer and the basement level is always nice & cool (despite having a new HVAC system).
Using the roaster, crockpot, air fryer, etc downstairs in my makeshift “summer kitchen” is turning out to be the best idea I’ve had this summer!
The roaster might also use less electricity than a standard oven? (I’m not sure about that because there’s conflicting info on the Internet.)
Either way, it helps keep my house cooler by using a summer kitchen & small appliances during this summer heat rather than my traditional kitchen/oven/stovetop….Also, I wish I had known about electric roasters sooner when my traditional oven went out a couple of years ago. I could have roasted a turkey, baked cakes, etc in it.
I “made do” with a toaster oven instead, but the size was limiting. I just wanted to share my new experience with the roaster in case anyone else’s traditional oven is on the fritz…or in case someone is looking for a cooler way to bake this summer.
Now please excuse me while I go eat the 9×13 cake I just pulled out of the roaster!
LisaI bake in my roaster ALL THE TIME. I would suggest adding a little bit of water at your discretion to keep certain foods from drying out too much.
I add about 1/2 c or so
WendyMy daughter learned this years ago when she ran out of cooking gas, live and learn
MichelleYeesh….I got one several years ago (clearance at Walmart also) and have tried anything except turkey at Thanksgiving!
LindaI have used a roaster for many years on the patio in the summer time so not to heat up the house with the regular oven!
DenniseI don’t bake but I LOVE my roaster. Besides obvious meats you can use it to cook large quantities of corn on the cob or baked potatoes.
Mine is often pulled out for family gatherings to keep food warm like hotdogs (obviously big groups).
Glad you found a way to keep some heat out of your house!
GingerI use mine on our back porch during hot weather, I bake biscuits, cakes, cookies, roast meats, make spaghetti sauce, soups everything and no heat in the house!
We also take it camping it’s a lifesaver!
MeganneThank you for the reminder of how universal the electric roaster is! My oven is on the fritz, so I haven’t been baking.
I’ll have to give it a try!
ReginaIf it keeps you more comfortable while providing nourishing meals, go for it!
