I have a 2006 Honda civic that is starting to have multiple issues & we want to sell it. (Kudos to those of you in the 200k + mile club – I’m just done with this car & want a more reliable option with kids).
It’s now drivable but with some current cosmetic issues. What methods do all of you use? I’m a bit afraid of getting scammed on Craigslist or fb marketplace – being a novice that approach feels scary!
Going to try taking it to car max but that might be a long shot since it’s older.
How do you all “dispose of” old cars?
ScottDo you live in Las Vegas(NV)?
As someone with 5 Hondas/Acuras
4 with 200k miles2 with 300k miles.
I can add another!PaulWe sold ours to a private party. Below market value because we didn’t want to deal with the headache.
Gone the next day to a good buyer on Facebook Marketplace
TonySelling person-to-person is the most financially optimal way to sell a car (or anything really!), because every other method involves a middleman of some kind taking a percentage of your profit.
Just set clear boundaries regarding the how, when, and where of the sale.
Everything is scary until you do it for the first time, but then you’ll gain a new skill to apply for the 2nd+ time you do it, plus more confidence to take on additional unfamiliar endeavors.
ElizabethI got our last car detailed and then took a ton of pics. Fb marketplace seller got it for bb value.
DavePark it in a conspicuous area with a sign on it for sale that includes your contact information.
Also list on FB marketplace.
JaI used fb marketplace to sell my moms vehicle. A dealer bought it… so I had to have them make a cashiers check.
PeterFB marketplace is great for selling. Can also do KBB sales, have sold a couple that way to dealerships (pays better than CarMax or Carvana).
Buying I really like Autotrader.
Just do nationwide searches and buy Certified Preowned (CPO, by manufacturer).
JacquieLast week I sold my 2004 Pontiac vibe by listing on Facebook marketplace. I got asking price the day after I listed it, first person who came to see it.
They paid cash
DianeWe have sold all of our cars ourselves, and we put for sale signs on them and put them in a well trafficked area and also Facebook marketplace.
You just have to be very careful and when you get messages from Facebook marketplace check their profile and make sure they are a legitimate Facebook user.
We did get a couple of messages that were scams, but they’re pretty easy to spot if you go the car max route they will probably lowball you.
But probably easier too.
KatieLast 2 vehicles have sold to a friend or family member. Before that, we sold one on marketplace. It was only there a day or two. A few people messaged seeming scammy or wanting to make payments.
The serious guy bought it that night. We met at Walmart and only took cash.
SarahI never thought I’d sell to a dealership, but I was surprised by the amount the dealership we’re buying a new car from offered for my mom’s used car.
Much better than CarMax.
Close enough to what we would have asked a private party for to make selling privately not worth the hassle. We’re going to sell to the dealership.
I have sold on FB marketplace in the past without issue. Cash transaction.
Looked for signs that buyers were real people in what they said in their communications and ignored anyone who gave me weird vibes
RachelIt’s been a couple of years, and my cars weren’t quite as old, but I was happy with my experience with Kelly blue book.
I plugged in the info and was able to sell to a dealer.
I might have made more of if tried to sell it privately, but going through KBB was so easy.
JamieI traded mine in when I bought. The price from places like carmax were very close to what I got and the hassle of private sale was just not worth thr small amount more of profit especially when it saved me on taxes.
I would compare trading in before discounting that idea.
ErinDepending on your price point Facebook was easy for me to sell our Honda element. I sold it for $2k. Guy had cash.
I signed over the title to him but you can also meet them at the SOS and get it signed there.
I was able to verify on the SOS website it’s no longer registered to us.
JacobVery easy to sell a used car. Some states require notorized signatures on the title, most don’t. Just list it on Facebook.
If you want it sold fast, there is carmax and carvana and the like but you will get lowballed on the value (it was great during covid but those days are behind us)
